Well Italy used to be for hundreds of years independent states or states that were part of other countries or empires like Spain, france, austria or thd holy roman empire. Romes independence goes right back to before the birth of christ.

Interesting bit of history. Rome and the papal states were annexed by Italy in 1871 and the popes refused to recognise the king of Italy or his right to rule Rome until the Vatican was made an independent city state within Rome and Italy.

Another independent state is the Knight's of Malta, they don't have a country but are a sovereign state with their own passports.

Another interesting fact is that there are more ancient Egyptian obelisks in Rome espicially in the Vatican than in Egypt.

How about Monaco in the south of France, its a tiny independent state.
