I'm curious what their alternatives would be and how they see it helping, but I'm mostly in agreement.
Especially if the system they want to abolish is the legal slave trade in America (aka America's prison system and profit motive).
there should be some secured mini cities with real houses and streets and all genders mixed and help to start there own company and the right to date and get married but it should be more secured and have cameras and no internet or weapons allowed so the prisoners can be away from society but still feel free and have a normal enough life.
That sounds worse.
Even in Scandinavia where they have literal prison villages, the residents are allowed monitored and controlled internet access (learning programs, training, sometimes some games), and have knives to cook with.
And their recidivism rates are among the lowest.
That approach sounds draconian and like it would only foster greater othering and exclusion among the residents.
you just sayd there recidivism are amongs the lowest. its sounds like it could help people having prisons villages. honestly america has the worst legal system and prisons in the world. anything would be an improvement.
I'm saying they do well without the draconian measures you're proposing, not saying the village is a bad idea.
It's the no knives, no internet and severe isolation that will drive them into higher recriminalization.
Rehabilitation is a nuanced and complex equation that isn't linearly related with more punishment.
you are right but if they dont have restrictions they might want to stay there their whole life and not get back in the real world and there won't be any room for new people.
How do you propose to get these people integrated back into society if you're isolating them and othering them even more than they are now?
You realize there's people who deliberately commit minor crimes to be sent back to the current prison system, right?
yea but they know they won't stay long. there are people here in Europe who want to save money so they shoplift then get arrested and get a free bed and food for three months then go back out. there are also people who do this in the mental health sector. i knew this woman who got her kitchen redone so she faked being mental ill to not have to pay for hotels whilst the builders were in the house.
... what does that have to do with creating actually productive prison systems?
what i mean is those places prison villages should only be for people with long sentences or serious crimes otherwise people would take advantage of them.
If we did that we could be living like they did on the frontier. Car thieves could expect 2 get shot or hung. Some peopl who got shot or hung were innocent but most deserved it. This is from The World Book Encyclopedia letter P 1969 edition.
What the hell is that
@Agape93 I believe it's exactly what it sounds like, unfortunately.
@Billlewis america has the most percentage of people in prison in the entire world even more than russia. why is this? because they use prisons in an unfair way.
... so like are they advocating us taking the law into our own hands? If so, i have an entire registry I can print out and work my way through
