When is someone no longer "young"?

Not necessarily "old", but just not "young". I've heard discussions on podcasts about people in their mid to late 30s being told that they're "still young".

For my part, I recently changed my Facebook profile picture and a longtime family friend commented "A handsome young man". I thought "I'm 36 years old." I'm as far removed from my childhood now as my parents were from theirs when I was a child. Bon Jovi's song It's My Life, released in 2000, is now playing on classic rock radio stations in my area (Jon Bon Jovi wasn't much older than I am now).

For the record, I'm not lamenting this at all. But when is someone no longer considered "young"?

Young is usually used today in a way that really means healthy, so whenever they become sick and get wrinkly or otherwise damaged would be when they are "old" in that context.

However the word young is supposed to mean when they are still physically developing, so anywhere between 12 and 30 years old is when adulthood starts and being young ends (regardless of what you look like at any point during that entire process), as that is when people tend to stop growing.

For me it was 14 when I stopped growing (I also still look the same now as I did then), for one of my friends it was 23, and for another it was 16, and another was 12, and another was 28. The one that stopped growing at 12 is about a foot taller than the rest of us, so its also possible to grow more in less time or grow less in more time.

The appearance changes that occur during development could also be very minimal or very plentiful.

But because of this drastic variation, there is no specific age in which a person is no longer young, as there is no set age in which you are expected to stop growing, look different, or look damaged.

Its entirely possible to remain youthful looking your whole life, and its possible to look aged from birth onward, and everywhere inbetween, because genetics and habits effect all of that.

I guess when you start feeling old constantly. When you start needingore assistance to do things than you use to.

I don't think it's the actual age. I've seen men in their 80's that would give some younger guys a run for their money.. And I've seen younger guys that should be in a nursing home lol.

Depends on how you still look and feel. I have a smart scale that measures your weight and body fat and body mass and bone density and stuff. One of the things it calculates is body age. It says my body age is 19. So I guess technically I'm still younger than what my actual age is. From a fitness level.

Past about 25-30 you are no longer young. Someone before the age of 25 I would still consider them basically a young kid

Probably 40 most professional athletes retire before that age. At around 35 is when things start to go downhill

If they can remember when MLB had 16 teams instead of its current 30.(The first MLB expansion was the American league's adding two teams in 1961;the National League added two clubs in '62 . H**l, you're not a kid anymore if you remember when MLB had its second [1969] expansion from 20 to 24 teams !!!)

I have some skin in the game for this answer but I'm on the wrong side of the half a century mark. I guess a good rule of thumb is when you likely have more years behind you than ahead of you... ☠️

It is more a state of mind. When you live long enough to see enough of the world that you become cynical and disillusioned it is hard to keep a youthful perspective on life.

You are no longer young when you start to feel old. That can be anywhere from teens to 50s to 90s.
