How often do you hit the horn?

According to the highway code, you're only supposed to beep your horn to warn other road users of your presence. But it's got so many other uses such as saying hello to your friend as you drive past, letting people know you're waiting outside their house, signaling approval to protesters, or just releasing your built up anger at a cyclist going at 1mph up a hill.

So how often do you beep your horn

I rarely hit the horn. Most common is when the stoplight has just turned green, and the driver in the car in front of me decides that texting and surfing the web is more important than driving, so I give them a couple love taps on the horn... beep... beep... to try to wake them up. Sometimes it works, sometimes they give me the finger... and later brake check me. One time, the driver didn't move until the light turned red, and then went through it, forcing me and the cars behind me to miss our turn at the green light.

Texters, left laners & the green light jokers that sit there get the horn from me.
Golfers get the horn too. I pass a golf course & someone is getting ready to hit the ball I hit the horn.

I don't. Shaking my helmet at them is much more effective. Squirm factor increases ten fold at traffic lights. Especially if their act was witnessed by others.


For safety I'll rev my engine a couple times to alert people a motorcycle is coming. In my truck I'll focus on avoidance of morons. Learned to think three steps ahead riding bikes. Makes you a better driver, too.


Everyone should take a motorcycle course. It's fun and educational.

Accidentally when is seek something in my purse.

Animals on the road sometimes just stare at lights of a car like hypnotized, horn is the tool to motivate them to move. Maybe for this rare case is horn usable but in 99% of cases car horn is just abused to annoy others.

I usually just use it as a means to communicate to other drivers through Morse code. "Does anyone else think this road could have been resurfaced a touch better if they'd waited for slightly higher temperatures so that the asphalt could have properly bonded to the concrete? Either way, I hope you all have a great da..." and then I'm at my destination.

Living in South Africa means needing to be very careful when hitting the horn. I'm considering just buying a truck with an air horn so I can accurately express my frustration with other drivers.

Add to it a line of cars every Saturday and Sunday, when Turkish weddings happen in Berlin... every driver hits the horn as often as they can :D

My horn is on almost all of the time. Sometimes it runs out and needs a little time to recharge, but it's soon ready to raise the alarm again.
