They can’t really afford to be. Depending on the country they do it in, most prostitution is illegal to begin with. You wouldn’t be committing a crime if the risk wasn’t worth the reward of the money. In my understanding only the truly desperate sell their bodies specifically for sex because they’re unsure of any other way to make as much money as they need in that moment.
And sex work as an industry in general is not for the faint of heart. Even in controlled environments like cam set-ups or strip clubs where physical contact is extremely limited, if not nonexistent, women still get exposed to the absolute worst parts of men and manhood as they meet men who tell these women the things they’d like to do to them, or why (a lot of older men will choose specific strippers bc they remind them of daughters/nieces/grandchildren they fantasize about, which is disgusting just on its own) and it generally is an experience not unlike gazing into an open, infected wound. Too disgusting to bear for too long but you can’t really look away if you’re getting paid to do it. To commit to even safe environments like that takes a lot more willpower than the average woman has, and prostitution is an entirely different vein. They don’t really get the option to be scared, even if they are, because it’s either that job or facing what they believe is a life without income which is necessary at this point.

I think they are especially the ones that don't have anyone protecting them. But some of them have no other options/are unable to escape, others might be addicted to drugs and others simply fully know the risks yet they still bet their lives for money.

It makes me sad when I think about it.

I’m sure there’s some fear that their “client” could be the next Ted Bundy but they’re obviously at a point in their life where money means more to them than self respect or safety.

A lot of prostitutes do get raped or sexually assaulted at some point though. Usually in the form of guys taking their money back or refusing to pay, slipping their condom off without permission, putting it in her butt without asking, etc. Sometimes they get beaten or threatened with a gun too.

Not a fun or safe job whatsoever.
