It is very old, and it's a peculiar way to save your ingame progress, basically you received a password and you had to write it down. Instead of using a menu to save or the autosave feature that is common now.

It had consequences, you could write down incorrectly your password, which meant you were screwed for your next gaming session. And, there was also a rather mystical errand where you could attempt at logging a made up password, out of the blue, which could glitch the game. I have seen this instance back then, it feels like actually watching paranormal activity you created yourself, extreme fun lol
