They literally had scenes of the main antagonist visiting Canada, which was perfectly fine and normal

Literally there was a scene where the wife of one of the guys was in Canada, looking incredibly out of place bc of that puritan-style dress, next to a Canadian woman and her daughter dressed like normal people, telling the woman she was very lucky, and the woman just gently pulled her daughter away from the American weirdo.

Exactly you she how weird that all was. The Americans in the story were considered refugees and migrants. Not treated like everything was normal.
