It's our interperetation of Old English, sure, but if you time travelled back to that time period, and spoke like that, they'd probably burn you as a witch.
My point being that accurate Old English isn't quite the same as, say, Shakespearean English, which is what your examples are closest to.
Yellow belly refers to a regiment from Lincolnshire that wore a yellow waistcoat. They disgraced themselves in the American war of independence and hence the term now means a coward
