States might start taxing the gas tax PER MILE gas tax. California has a pilot program already underway. What are your thoughts?

They already tax the fuel at the pump, not sure what would be the point, the more mileage the more fuel you used and have to pay more so they get paid anyway, only trucks have to pay mileage tax when crossing the border to another state, not sure how they could enforce it with cars unless you write your car off as a business expense, anyone visiting California would not be paying anyway

I guess when the government started pushing fuel efficiency and now EV’s. They didn’t think far enough in advance of using less fuel. Most states use the fuel tax to pay for their roads. At least, that is what they tell us.
They will get their taxes from somewhere. As long as it is comparable. I guess we will need to grin and bear it. Pennsylvania has talked about this. They would eliminate the gas tax. Then put in place the mileage tax.

Florida has gas tax holidays that stretch on for months every year dropping the price of fuel and California has double taxation on gas to oppress the people. Two different worlds.

@exitseven. Back in the pre seventies and eighties. You could reach under the dashboard and unhook the speedometer. Now with all of the on board computers. A car may not run if the speedo doesn’t work. My wife gets messages from Ford that she needs to schedule a service because they know how many miles she traveled. Big brother can watch you!
