The gas tax at the pump is already a whopping 59.6 cents per gallon. If you're not using gas, you're not paying any taxes towards maintenance of the roads you are using, and everybody who pays for gas at the pump is paying for you to use those roads for free. To be clear, this is not something that is taxed on top of gas usage taxes. It is a pilot program intended to study possible ways to make up for lost gas tax revenue that helps support the state's transportation system. The revenue loss is caused by more drivers switching to hybrid and electric vehicles. I would suggest that NOT doing something to make up for that lost revenue would be a huge problem and our roads would be far worse than they already are. Maybe read this article or a different one from another bona fide fact checker, then decide if it's a good idea or not.

Let’s start with your assertion that there won’t be tiered taxation. Of course there will be. States aren’t the only ones applying taxes to fuel prices. People and organizations for whom electric vehicles are wholly inadequate for their needs will be paying the mileage tax AND the fuel tax.
Second, the advocates of this mess are arguing that there’s NO WAY the scaled mileage fees would reach thirty cents even for the thirstiest vehicles. If that’s true, then why is nearly sixty cents not enough right now? Electric vehicles currently account for only about 1% of currently registered vehicles. The math isn’t mathing, as the kids say.
Finally, the truth as it so often is with government is that Newsom and his cronies just needed a new scheme to bilk working class families out of more money while simultaneously producing yet another excuse for NOT using the BILLIONS that they are already taking on things like maintaining roads and bridges.

That's just a gas tax with extra steps. But just saying that to myself, and the electric car revolution that started in California for the future makes 100% sense to me now.

There does need to be a transfer from gas tax that is used to maintain roads into a potential world where electricity is powering cars. Hate on electric cars all you want; this is a logical transfer from one standard tax phased out to a new standard tax, not actually changing the status quo in itself that I actually never thought of unti just now.

Not a "Good idea"' as the number of people who use taxis will fall and thus probably result in decrease in the number taxis on the street and taxi drivers being paid off.

The Californian Government rarely comes up with a "Good idea" and this is not one of them, I doubt that they have thought through all of consequences of this "Good idea" and how many jobs it will cost inside and outside of the Taxi industry.

Let’s see. At 30 cents per mile. Take an average of 35 miles per gallon in an IC car. That would be the equivalent of spending $10.50 for a gallon of gas. Quite an incentive to buy electric! Providing this mileage tax was only directed at the EV’s.
Pennsylvania was talking about raising the registration fees on EV’s to offset the loss of the fuel tax.

I doubt it is 30 cents a mile. If it is, that is a massive increase. If car got 20 miles per gallon on average, that would be equivalent to $6 a gallon just in tax.
