It's a long story that spans 4 years. Are you really up for that?
Asker6 moUp for anything. Lay it on me I’m here to listen
Opinion Owner6 moOK, well, I worked at my job for over 20 years. About 5 1/2years ago I was in arguably the best shape of my life I lifted weights, did 20 minutes of cardio every day and played about a 1/2 to 1 hr of pick-up ball on most days. Strangely enough I started putting on weight. As I put on weight I got more and more fatigued. My doctor said my thyroid was off and put me on medication for it. But this took a while they wanted make sure I didn't have thyroid cancer or anything. Anyways as I got more fatigued I quit playing ball, cardio and weight training. Within a year I had gained a lot of weight. And I was struggling to make it through work each day. With a year and a half. I was so tired I was falling asleep at railroad stops and I even fell asleep standing up at work, and fell and broke 4 metatarsal.
(There's more I'll say when I'm done it won't let me type it all at once. I warned you it was long).
Opinion Owner6 moI get fitted for a boot for my foot and the doctor tells me to stay off it for a month. So I return back to work after that month still fatigued and at this point I have balance issues. First day back I slip and fall and break my fibula and dislocate my ankle on the other leg. This one was bad enough that I had to be taken to the hospital. They put my ankle back into place, put a splint on it and tell me I'll need surgery in a couple weeks. They tell me I need to do some pre-appts. to ensure I'm OK to have surgery. But because of my splint that runs up my leg past my knee, about mid thighs, I cannot bend my knee. So I can't drive, nor can I fit into a normal sedan. So I had to call rideshares which had to be ok'd through my work insurance. Each driver I got English was barely their first language and they kept sending compact cars because it's cheaper for the insurance even though I told them I needed a van EACH TIME I called.
Opinion Owner6 moSo I eventually get each pre-op appt. Done. Since this was in the time of the covid breakout, they had me test for covid at the first pre-op appt., I passed. Then 2 days before surgery they tested me again. This time I failed. Because of my I couldn't go anywhere. So the only place I could have gotten it was from the rideshare or the doctors. This will be relevant later.
So thankfully the doctor decided to go ahead with the surgery anyhow. I show up the day of surgery and they had me lay down. And they were concerned because when I did my oxygen saturation plummeted. They asked me if I had sleep apnea or anything. I said I've never been diagnosed with it but I had put on considerable weight over the past year and a half so it wouldn't surprise me if I was. They said they would check for that before I left the hospital.
Opinion Owner6 moThey performed the surgery and I woke up in the ICU. Something I asked if it was normal procedure as I didn't expect that and no one answered me. As I would come to understand later my weakened state from covid would play the biggest role in that. I was never so bad off (at least in my mind) that I needed intubated. But I was on oxygen. And it was a short stay in the ICU (only 48 hrs) but the contracting covid would change my status from outpatient procedure to being quarantined for a month. But like anyone I still had to rehab. I just got to do it alone because I was quarantined. Strangely enough after I got moved out of the ICU into a regular room and did therapy my heart rate would soar with the littlest exertion. I asked if that was caused by the covid. Since covid was new to everyone I never got a satisfying answer to that. After the month was up it was decided that I still was not strong enough to go home. But my works insurance didn't want to pay the costly hospital stay anymore. Southern moved me from the hospital to a nursing home to continue my rehab.
Opinion Owner6 moThere I would be informed that my work was NOT paying for my stay in the ICU because it was billed for Covid. And covid was not a work related issue. After two weeks in the nursing home I was deemed strong enough to go home. A few days later I returned to work. The doctor didn't want me working a full shift right away though (good thing, because I couldn't) well I might have gotten rest in the hospital I still fatigued really fast, my heart rate went high with very little exertion and now for some reason my back was really weak like it was hard to keep my upper torso up.
Opinion Owner6 moI go back to the doctor for my follow up. I told him I had numbness in my foot and he said that would lessen as my foot stop swelling (it didn't as I would find out later. But by then I was done with that doctor). I returned to my regular doctor and he was concerned that my heart rate was not going down. They sent me to a cardiologist. He prescribed me a drug to slow my hear rate. I would see him 2 more times over the next 2 years. But before I get to that my doctor had watched my blood sugar rise as I had put on weight. I went from having normal blood sugar to pre-diabetes, to diabetes. Considering my age and the fact that it does run in my family it isn't a surprise I would get it. But it's how quickly it all happened. I was healthy a couple years before hand.
Opinion Owner6 moBefore I left the hospital the performed a test to see if I had sleep apnea. I did. The order me a c-pap machine. But because of the pandemic and the backlogs of orders I didn't get my machine for another 6 months. As soon as I got the machine I dropped 50 lbs. And my blood sugar started to come down. But my bloodwork before that also showed high white blood cell count so the doctor sent me to a cancer Dr. because they wanted to rule out leukemia (he said it was possible it just immune response to inflammation (and considering my back I assumed that's what it was). As my blood sugar came down my blood work would also return to normal. Of course I stayed in the diabetic range though.
Opinion Owner6 moSo finally I go back to the cardiologist for the 3rd time. While I was in the waiting room my heart started racing. When I got to see the doctor she told me I was in atrial fibrillation, so they sent me to the hospital. After they put me on a medication to control my heart rhythm, with 48 hrs. my heart reverted back to normal rhythm and they released me albeit with a blood thinner that they said I would be on most likely for life (still not sure if all this happen caused it, covid caused it, or if it was just destined to happen. Finally after getting released from the hospital this time I felt like I had a reserve of energy that I had not had over the past 3 years. They scheduled me for a heart ablation wilhich is a minor heart procedure where they coterize nodes on the inside of your heart to lessen the odds of having another afib episode.
Opinion Owner6 moby the way I left out a year after I got out of hospital the first time the firm I worked for went under new management in my abscence. So when I got back we had a new boss that just assumed I was lazy. So after having had there for over 20 years. He terminated me. And didn't even call me to tell me. So in that weakened state I had to move back with my mother. So after the ablation when I got my strength back I started hittng it hard trying to get strong again so I could go back to work. This brings me up to about 2 months ago. My mother didn't feel I was ready to go back to work yet. But fate would have another twist for us both as 2 months ago she passed away of a fatal heartattack.
So I'm sitting here not sure about how strong I am, not sure what I can do physically or for how long with a broken heart in more ways then one. Jobless, eventually going to be homeless if I don't find something I can do. The only bright spot in this is I do have a retirement plan I can fall back on if worse comes to worse. But, that's how life's been treating me.
Asker6 moOh wow that is a lot. Have things been improving for you? Or is it still kind of bad right now

It’s ok I knew it would happen, he was older. Dating has been ok-nothing worth turning into a relationship, money-ok got to travel and almost to my goal of getting a bike, family-good other than losing my dog, and friends-lost some but it’s ok
