It’s pretty common for children to have a persistent fear of the dark. There’s an evolutionary explanation for this. Many predators hunt at night. Especially as man evolved, they would have been most vulnerable at night. So low light and visibility seems dangerous; especially if there are noises reaching out to us from the darkness. Honestly, fear of the dark isn’t uncommon in adults. It’s a natural extension of the fear of the unknown and the recognition of our reduced faculties in darkness. Something or someone could sneak up on us in the dark. We could trip, fall and hurt ourselves with nobody around to help.
Even if you don’t have a persistent fear of the dark, maybe you went camping and you became a bit anxious after the fire went out. Or maybe you remember being a kid and worrying that the monster under your bed or in your closet came out at night and might decide to kidnap you or eat you next time.
I was more than a little ambivalent about the dark as a child. I didn’t really carry a fear per se, but i used to try to leap from the doorway of my bedroom to my bed when i flipped off the lights at night. I wasn’t scared so much as i didn’t want to give my monster the upper hand. If he’s coming to get me, i’m not gonna make it easy! I used to fantasize about beating up my monster and sending him to go get a bigger monster to send back. I’m not joking.
I was exhilarated by the thought of darkness and dangerous things hidden within it. Always have been. Even now, i always watch my scary movies late at night with no lights on. I would luv for that “Are they coming to get me?” feeling to creep into my head as i turn off my phone and fall asleep. Sometimes i’ll hear an unusual noise at night and i wait; quietly hoping for something terrible to come through my bedroom door and give me a fright! Then i can bash it!
Have you ever been afraid of the dark?

The dark can't harm you, it's what's hiding in the dark that's the problem. That rapist down a dark alley, the predator in the woods, even that hole in the field waiting to sprain your ankle.
But if you're in a safe area it's surprisingly relaxing. Go for a walk in the woods at night or along a rocky shore it feels more alive. There's stuff scurrying about, you can hear munching, everything looks more vibrant.
I wouldn't be stupid enough to walk down an unlit backalley in a city, but I've no fear walking at night in the middle of nowhere.
I would never get out in the woods and walk at night time. You never know what kind of a wild animals out there or some escape convict hiding out in the woods. It’s just not safe to actually be on the mountain Hill doing that. And don’t forget about the snakes and sometimes there’s some big hornets 🐝 nest out there in the woods that are dangerous if you run into it at night.
But you do find blueberries once in a while, and they’re awesome, but of course that’s for daytime walking
And a certain parts, you can get your Christmas tree and chop it down and take it back to the house. But I’m talking about the North Carolina mountains when I used to go every summer for vacation because we had a family campground.
No dangerous land animals in the UK and if you do meet anyone late at night it's usually a dog walker or a fisherman heading to his mark. I did meet a guy about 1 a. m. who said he was out looking for big cats and UFOs but he seemed harmless enough Escaped criminals head to cities or if really dumb back home.
But we’re talking about being in the woods isolated not where there’s a pub around the corner and places like that, also, what about bears don’t you guys have bears? If you’re gonna walk around at 1 o’clock in the morning by yourself alone anywhere in England or anywhere else I would recommend that you bring some kind of pepper spray protect yourself. Learn some self-defense because it’s a dangerous world yes even in England. I know you live more close to Ireland, but that’s still in England
Yes, I used to require the closet light left on and the door open. It started after we moved to the new house my dad built. I had just turned 6 a few days earlier and you I didn't like the new, big house. I don't know why but I didn't. The third night mister hand arrived and tried to take me from my bed. It growled and pulled at the covers preventing my being able to cover my head up. It was a rather large hand, about a foot wide and was og ghost substance. Meaning it was wispy and white but you could see through it sort of.
Well, screaming bloody-murder for my mom I vaulted out of bed and took off. Ran right into the door jam knocking myself out cold. My sisters never let me live that down.
You might say I have a...
DON'T. SAY. IT!
...fear of the dark...
https://www.youtube.com/embed/NmQN635RheoAs a kid I had that fear of something in the closet or under the bed. I know there's nothing now. My only fear of the dark is if I heard something suspicious IN it! Otherwise, except in places I'm don't know well, my dark fears are few and far!
I remember being a kid and nervously walking up to the light switch going "pfff I'm not afraid of shit, in fact, I'm gonna walk to my bed"
And then I'd turn off the light take 2 steps and then DASH to my bed and hide under the blanket as if it made some kind of invisible force shield to keep out the goblins and ghosts.
I didn't have the balls to want the bigger monster to come back then 😂
Not really. I would only scream if someone were to prank me and suddenly jump behind me. I used to watch the "Are You Afraid of the dark" Nickelodeon series. It was interesting.
not really. just when I hear weird noises and cannot see what is causing them.
@chazmatazz269 No, I work in dark and feel calmness
