Valentine's Day is a commercial day, not "a day to celebrate with your loved ones"!

Valentine's Day is approaching. And I see once more (and here in GAG as well), how people go crazy and feel "rushed" to give a present to their loved ones. Isn't it hypocritic?

What is Valentine's Day actually? Is it really a day to show your love to your "SO" or a commercial day in order to make flower shops richer? I believe it's actually the second. The only people who get profited on Valentine's Day are those who work at a flower shop. I'm pretty sure those who work at a flower shop, they will laugh behind your backs and say "Haha, look at those suckers. But who cares? More money for us.". Yes, flower shops are those who actually CAN celebrate Valentine's Day.

I know I'm not the most suitable person to speak about V.D., since I never had a girlfriend, but I believe I can realise it's a commercial day. Those amonge you who celebrate it, iot seems like you appear to remember your partner ONLY on V.D.. It would be highly more appreciated if you were doing those "Valentine Day" things on other days as well, than just remembering to show your "True Love", only when this day comes.

That's all. Hope you'll realise the actual meaning of Valentine's Day, sooner or later.

Oh and if you get frustrated if you didn't receive any present from your loved ones on Valentine's Day, then you're nothing more than just a hypocrite.

My boyfriend and I are aware of the commercialism in Valentine's Day, same with Halloween and every other holiday we celebrate. Most Holidays have lost the meaning that was originally intended while others maintain that original intention (making money). Even though that is the reality of the situation doesn't mean it needs to apply to us. We don't feel pressured to do anything for Valentine's day because whatever we decide to do it's for the purpose of enjoying our time with one another, including laying in bed and taking a nap with each other. Valentine's day might not mean anything to companies other than making money, but just because it doesn't mean anything to them doesn't mean it shouldn't mean anything to us, and this thinking applies to every other holiday.

Lol, I don't see why it really matters whether it's commercialized or not. It's just a holiday. If people want to celebrate it, then let them. If they don't, then it's no biggie.

1. It is easy to criticize what others do with their significant others on Valentine's Day since you have never had one. Your post reminded me of an exchange between a Groucho Marx character and a society matron in one of the infamous Marx Brothers movies:

Groucho: Yeah, and with an attitude like that, you probably never will!

Christmas is a commercialized holiday, the purpose of the holiday is not for us to give cards and gifts and eat too much, but to honor the birth of Jesus. How do you celebrate Christmas?

The same goes for pretty much all the other major holidays because there is always that opportunity for people to sell more shit related to those holidays to those that want to buy more shit.

People get overly materialistic but then I realized how miserable it can be.

You buy and accumulate all this shit in your lifetime and yet in the end the very moment you pass on and leave this world all that shit you ever bought and owned is no longer really yours and you don't really have any control over them anymore as you lose possession of them. Sure, you can make a clear Will of some sort that may make it specifically clear who must take care of all your "beloved" possessions and belongings and how they must take care of them, but it's no longer yours anymore when you are gone from this world.

So I would have to agree on that "true love" comes from the heart and mind rather than from various products people buy as presents for each other. So if someone was true to their feelings, and emotions then whether they got gifts, presents or not should not even be a big fucking deal.

I view it differently than you do, even though I don't usually do anything super special for it.

It's a day where parents don't have to feel guilty for spending money on each other rather than their children, and can do something special like hire a baby sitter and go out to some place nice. It's a day to remind each other that the romance is still very much alive. Parents with young children can't always go out as much as they used to. This is one day out of the year that is a guaranteed romantic night away. You can try to plan for others, but sometimes your plans fall flat and life gets in the way... but this is one day that you don't have to feel guilty for saying "this is our time!"

And for couples everywhere, it's a day to take a step back and reflect on all the reasons why you love your partner and how happy you are to be with the person you're with. It's a nice "excuse" to go out and do something together that's nice.

My significant other and I don't have very much money, but we still go out to a cheap dinner and share a candy bar or two and it's a very romantic time for us. We are always lovey-dovey all year round, but there's something especially special about doing it on a day where the whole world is feeling the same feelings :P

Sure flower shops benefit from it. And sure it was commercialized. But that doesn't mean there isn't a meaning behind it! There's sentimental value in celebrating it, and I hope someday you feel that way, too.
