Isn’t it embarrassing to have him as president? From Portugal to japan the people think he is a idiot. I don’t want to generalize and I know many are against him in America. But I have to say america has a long way to go after trump. It will take a long time until America gets any reputation again. (Even if the political reputation was not the best before but now it’s even worse)

I started hearing about this in the UK Brexit vote and Trump - Divisions in families forming, scary times - Don't know about US but it got to the stage that Brexit was banned from being mentioned at kids' birthday parties because of scuffles.

Families have always had members with opposing political views.

Ironically, you've ignored the largest factor in the erosion of family. Progressive values.

Republicans have always sided with religion, traditional marriages, family and anti-abortion. All of which are linked to having strong ties to family and community.

Progressive democrat views are the exact opposite. They reject most forms of religion - especially christian and catholics. Oddly, they are in favor of muslims and love immigrating them to the US.

Progressive democrats cheer single mothers as "brave". Promote non-traditional gay/lesbian marriages and even adoption of children.

Feminists have told women to go out and make money... and so they have. Women today are now in university, and they climb the corporate ladder... and the best years of their lives are spent chasing money. Yet, despite all this "progress", women are more unhappy today than their parents and grandparents. When women hit the wall at 30 years old, and realize they are not desired by men anymore, they sink into a spiral of loneliness that their career and money cannot fill.

The internet is also rife with problems. Social media has replaced true real-life friends. Kids grow up thinking 50,000 likes = 50,000 friends. Then, when shit hits the fan, none of those 50,000 people life a finger to help them. And that's when children become disconnected with others. Family dinners are not replaced with each person with a bowl of food sitting at the computer/TV screen, or staring at their smartphone. Kids no longer connect with their parents, and children resenting their own family is on the rise.

All of this has been growing long before Trump arrived on the scene. And the effects are much worse than the family political debates you describe.

I say this time and time again. The issues are what matters. I'll make my grandma cry if it means yelling at her for thinking that mexican babies deserve to be kept in cages. People tend to get irrational when it comes to political races. But why are they called races anyway? It's not a competition. This country is a team. Who we pick as our star athletes IS important but why we compete is what matters. Freedom from religious persecution, racism, doing what is right when everything seems to be going wrong in our world. Helping other countries while also supporting the men and women who fight for our country. Respecting constitutional rights while fighting the injustices and atrocities commited by those who abuse them to murder innocent people. I may disagree with your opinions but I will fight bloody knuckled for your right to have them.

What Trump is doing is attempting to legitimize opinions (Fascism, Racism, Xenophobia) that used to be rightly and almost universally condemned. People are shocked to find that some of the people they deal with every day hold these views. Its scary to think that almost a third of the United States electorate is willing to end democracy is support of their hate.

I'm not letting it destroy anything because he is the president most of what is said about him is him being misquoted or lied about it doesn't cause a rift in my family because even though we are mixed with Republicans and Democrats we all know Trump is not that bad a guy and we will have a happy Thanksgiving without arguing.

Trump is an embarrassment to the country but blaming politics on ruined families is actually pretty dumb. There was likely little structural integrity in terms of a solid relationship to begin with if the relationship was built off such intense differences in opinion. Family dysfunction is ITS OWN PROBLEM
