Is factioning ruining American society?

Malcolm X once said (I am paraphrasing) that the best way for white citizens to help the black experience is to speak among their own communities, not preach to the choir. I belief in concept this applies to a lot of things. If we as American individuals only surround ourselves with like-minded people, as seems to be very much the case recently, discussion and growth ends.

I believe that sociopolitical factioning starts at the interpersonal level. Refusing to associate with those on the other side of a political fence accelerates the process of any opinion become extreme in its opposition.

Is it still possible to maintain relationships and provide alternate perspectives? Or are we already too divided into our extremes?
