I went from preferring men to be older than me to liking younger boys now - discussing how my taste has changed over the years

I’m 24, turning 25 this year (in fact this month) and my whole life I always thought I liked older men.

I had a long term relationship from 15-23 with a boy almost six years older than me. I was so proud of it because girls my age were only with boys their age and I had an older boy.

At 24 I was briefly with someone 12 years older than me - it was a disaster… The age gap was too big and we had many problems because of this.

Still at 24 I started speaking to younger boys 17-25 and they seem to be sooooo much better than older men. I particularly prefer the ones in the 17-21 range as far as compatibility is concerned but that would mean they’re 3-7 years younger than I am.

I would probably prefer to marry a younger boy at this point.

I always thought that I would NEVER go for someone younger and I said they always had to be at least six years older than me.

I am 24 but I am extremely small build and have a baby face so people often presume I am under 14. I go to weddings and have kids come upto me and asking me what year I am in at school, I have parents asking my mother the same question so I figured going younger is not that bad after all - people can’t tell anyway, especially if the gap is under 10 years.

I belong to a super orthodox community where people marry early and so a lot of my friends are married or getting married and the boys also tend to be married by 30 so I feel like the options of available men older than me are dwindling and that has forced me to consider younger, unless I delve outside of my own community… which is outside my comfort zone and I haven’t done it before.

When I was younger I had a few older boyfriends and they did not work out. Now I prefer slightly younger or the same age as me. Reason being is because men of the younger generation have actually been taught how to treat a woman with respect and are more romantic. Many older men are disrespectful and just want to use women

It's probably like training wheels for relationships, though to a different extent for different people. The first woman I was with was older by a few years, though that went nowhere.

Generally guys are more immature when you're young, and girls tend to want older guys across the board. Now that guys younger and at your age are more mature, you want them, and guys at the older range are taking metamucil and viagra.

I wouldn't mind sex with a 24 year old, but wouldn't have any illusions about compatibility in a relationship with that large of a gap.

I was with someone your age and it was such a disaster 🥺 But I guess everyone is different and if it didn’t work with one person who was more than a decade older it doesn’t mean it won’t work with other people who are a lot older. It would be on an individual/case-by-case basis. I always preferred older because I feel protected and more loved/looked after if the man is older.

Well, that's how relationships always work out, if you didn't treat people on a case by case basis for something that intimate it would be concerning lol
It's also what I meant about training wheels for a relationship. You feel safer, more protected, more loved, but at the same time you don't have to feel as attached, or as worried about getting hurt. Especially if you can say other people are only looking at you as a gold digger, easy, etc.
The risks are lower compared to guys your age, but so are the possible paths to the future.
Like what are the chances you would take the risk of having a family with a guy my age who already has a family, compared to a guy within 4 years of your age both ways?

Well, regarding age, I have never been interested in older women, but I do occasionally date women a little older than me (with subpar results). I am much less willing to take a chance on a woman who has one or more issues.

No hate, but I don’t get how most people commenting here are OK with you flirting with a minor. That is completely unacceptable and against the law. Do not go after high school kids, that is wrong on so many levels. You are 24, and your maturity level is so much higher than someone who is still in high school. Just because you like younger guys does not mean that you should date a kid who is still in high school.

The age of consent in most countries is 16 and a guy above puberty age is not a child. Not all 17-21 year olds are appealing because some still look like kids but there are also exceptions who look like they’re 30. I’m not deliberately going after someone who is 17-21 but if I find them attractive it’s a different matter. I met my first boyfriend when I was 15 and he was 21. We were together from when I was 17-23. I never thought it was wrong… like I said, the age of consent is 16 and I reached puberty at the age of 10. I had a fully developed woman’s body by 13. If we were to discuss about maturity then there are some 18-year-olds more mature than 30-year-olds.

You do you as long as they’re over the age of 18 then who cares? Lots of men that are older date younger women a lot so I don’t see the difference as long as you’re not like 50 with a 20 year old then that’s a little weird but yeah.. I was 22 when I had a boyfriend who was 18, I also dated older before like 5-10 years. I don’t think of age much as long as I like the person and we’re two adults, I’d happily date and marry my age as well or older, or a guy who’s younger as long as I’m happy. Love is love!

For most guys. Older guys tend to have more safety concern. They get higher pain resistant but fear of death increase with age as well.

Yes. I tend to get bored easily. I’m a very sexual person and have a lot of sexual energy so physical attraction and having someone who matches my drive is extremely important but I also value loyalty, love and care which seems to come more with age for men.

For some reason I feel like most men 28-35 are married or unavailable aswell which is sad if you want to go older. And the men who are single tend to be 40+ divorcees or men who have never been married and as you get to know them you understand why nobody married them.

The thing is that I am not a party animal. I have never been to parties. I don’t even go out unless it is for work and I don’t socialise unless it is a wedding or female only kitties (we meet and have tea and gossip). I also have always been a teetotaller - I have never drank and I have also certainly never smoked. I stay away from drugs, I try to cook and hold a very traditional mindset. I also dress very modestly. Therefore I certainly tick all the boxes of “wifey material.” I just can’t find a man who is protective, loving, loyal, caring, matches my sexual energy and whom I find attractive to marry.

I'm 40+. I've never married. I've had 4 women propose to me. I lost one to a car wreck, one to cancer, two I said no to. A handful of others that have come and gone left because of the time commitment of my work. Of course, nobody was complaining about the 14-room house backing into 25 acres of protected woodland from the years of serving my country.

I "get" liking younger men because they may be more energetic, but I'd say you've just found the wrong men. I did a half marathon last weekend while carrying 34lbs. Turns out I have Rocky Mountain spotted fever, so I'm dialing back activity this week, but as part of my old job I was routinely going on 12-16 hour patrols in extreme temperatures wearing close to 90lbs some times. With the current obesity crisis, I'd venture I'd walk circles around most men half my age. At 21 I was far less established, had less ability to provide security, and didn't own any of my houses yet.

The moral of the story, if you're still reading at this point, is if you're being mentally tortured by older men, might I suggest that "time on this planet" and age are not always the same number, and there are still a great many places where boys hide in older shells.

I stayed with them because I have daddy issues and wanted a man who would love me like a father because I had no present father figure growing up. My father was never affectionate and neither was my mother. I realised I couldn’t get affection from men regardless so recently I decided it’s better to go younger because of the sexual benefits that come with being with younger boys. At my age I could still go for boys upto 30 and they’d be older yet still very sexually active but I am fed up of being mentally tortured by older men.
