My boyfriend got me a bottle of liquor for my birthday?

So my birthday was yesterday and I've been looking forward to seeing what my boyfriend was going to get me.. We've been seeing each other for about 8 months. His birthday was in November and I got him like a little gift bag of some things he likes (packers pajamas, whisky, slippers, socks and tanning lotion) nothing big but I put in effort and thought within his present. So yesterday hits and he gives me his present of some parrot bay rum thrown into some huge bag with no card or anything... as soon as i saw it, I was heartbroken. He said I'm hard to shop for but u got me alcohol? First of all he knows I dont drink much.. second he looks like he just bought it that day.. it just seems no effort or thought was put into it.. I'm very upset and was crying all night. I wanna send him this message and just be like why alcohol? Did you make an effort? I don't wanna seem like a bitch or spoiled brat, i just thought i meant more than a bottle of liquor., :( i would of been happy with some flowers and a meaningful card, I didn't expect nothing big, just time and thought... am i overreacting?

You can just ask him how he came up with alcohol because you're curious, you're not a brat because I understand you were hoping he would get you something that would show that he knows you instead of an effortless trip to the liquor store. You're not exactly overeacting, and you're not expecting the presents to equal up- its just you thought more about what he likes and would want, and you feel like alcohol is more less meaningful. If my boyfriend got me alcohol I would kind of be pissed because it's not sentimental or thoughtful really.. I mean I could get my own alcohol or my friends usually give me alcohol lol

I just dont know how to mention it without sounding unappreciative.. I have this long message written out just saying that I thought I meant more to him than a bottle of liquor.. but i don't wanna send it and sound like a dick. I mean he asked me a couple weeks ago what I wanted for my birthday but I didn't give him an answer or anything.. I've just been looking forward to what he was gonna get me and i ended up so disappointed

Well don't compare yourself to a bottle of liquor right.. its the thought not the THING. and there was no thought, I just think you should just be like "honestly it kind of upset me that _____"

Did he take you to dinner or anything? Men, especially young men, are bad at buying presents. You got him what was basically just a care package id say what he got you was about the guys version of that unless he got you his favorite liquor. LOL

maybe wait til Christmas to see if he's got somethign else up his sleeve before you presume anything... it does certainly seem like a last minute and little thought type of gift but being that your birthday is so close to Christmas maybe he's got something in store for you... assuming that celebrate Christmas.

if you get sort of short changed or at least get a gift that looks quickly put together then you may just be dealing with a guy who is a bad gift giver OR puts little thought into

Well we were talking about seeing each other on Christmas and I told him I wanted to see him so I can give him his present and his response was "no don't get me anything, return it" in a jokingly matter so I'm kinda assuming I'm not getting anything from him to be honest

i wouldn't assume anything based on that conversation. i know you're hurt by the gift. the presentation lacked thought for sure. but again i'll say see what happens on Christmas. if he drops the ball again you just consider whether or not you can be with someone who doesn't seem to value you enough to put some thought into a gift.

Maybe he has no sense of creativity. To him, that could've been the best he could do so no, it wouldn't be smart to tell him something like "did you make an effort"

You can express concern since you aren't a heavy drinker and ask why the liquor bottle, but I'm not sure how you'd do that without sounding unappreciative.

You blame him for buying an alcoholic beverage as a birthday present yet you said that you bought him a bottle of whiskey for his birthday!!

She said she got him "things he likes," of which whiskey was just one thing. After 8 months, she should know whether or not he drinks, and if he does, what his favorite drink is.

Likewise, he ought to know by now that she doesn't drink. Getting a non-drinker alcohol for a gift, especially spirits, is a really thoughtless gift.

I think he should've just asked you what you wanted for your birthday. Next time, just tell him what you want. I don't think your boyfriend is good at guessing what you like.
