My boyfriend compliments other women, but not me? Why?

He'll say other women are " hard working", "smart", "nice", " funny" or whatever... but he never gives me any compliments like that. Sometimes it feels like he actively avoids doing so. Like today I showed him a portrait that I drew and he said " I don't like those portraits, every artist draws women who are pretty. I've never seen an artist draw an ugly woman. its harmful to society to just draw beautiful women".

I know he wasn't saying it as a personal attack, but I felt so discouraged after that. Why can't he ever just say something nice about me? No matter what I do I feel criticized.

In terms of the painting... His point may be fair enough, people rarely do paint an ugly woman.. Doesn't mean you can't compliment the skill of i t!
If he is saying other women are working hard, skilled, funny etc. But can't even bring himself to say something nice about you, that's not right and you deserve to feel loved and wanted by your boyfriend. Even if you're still new to the relationship or together 10 years, it's still not respectful behaviour.

I don't know why he's doing it, but he sounds like he's not that great of a boyfriend in my opinion. He's not really that bright either if he thinks art is about changing society. Sorry to break the cold, harsh reality to him, but artists want to paint something that is beautiful. That's just how it is. Is he a social justice warrior or something?

It seems like he's taking you for granted. He knows you're his, so he just doesn't put any effort into complimenting you, or even supporting you.
Does he not put any effort at all into the relationship?
