I assume that you're angry because you believe he's insinuating that you're fat. But I think you shouldn't assume too quickly. Is he a physically active guy who enjoys working out? Like others have suggested, maybe he just wanted to work out with you, lots of couples do it. It would be his way of getting closer to you.
And even if he isn't a gym guy and doesn't have a membership himself, what if he thought you'd like to have fun at the gym? Lots of girls enjoy getting active there, maybe he assumed you'd love it as well?
either way, it's ok to be dissapointed with the gift, but unless he admits that was his intention, you shouldn't be angry with him. Talk to him if you don't like it, tell him you appreciate the gift but if you don't plan on using it there is no point in wasting money00 Reply

+1 yWhy is that bad? Does he also have a gym membership? Maybe he wants to work out with you. Or he thought you'd he interested in working out or staying in shape.
I'd understand being upset it he bought you a Weight Watchers membership or something, but I thinkna gym membership is great and it doesn't mean he thinks you're fat. The gym is not just for fat people.
If it's really not the kind of gift you want and you know you're never going to use it, be honest with him. The gym isn't for everybody.10 Reply
1.1K opinions shared on Relationships topic. Have you indicated that you'd like a gym membership or you'd like to be more active or something?
In my experience, guys tend to be very practical when it comes to gift giving. They don't seem to think "what would my lady like?" and instead they think "what does my lady need?" It's very possible he has good intentions here, but yeah if you've never indicated wanting to exercise more I would be a little miffed.00 Reply

+1 yIt depends, did you ask for one or say at some point you'd like to go but can't afford it? If so I think it's quite a thoughtful gift.

😕 ouch. Ask his intent Hun, he could have thought it would be a nice thing with no malice or thought of changing you so it's best to get his view before getting worked up.
My husband bought me a vacuum cleaner one year... he does the vacuuming not me but when I asked why he said I'd always get mad about our old one not getting ALL dog hair off the couch and he wanted to fix that for me
Asker+1 yHaha. Aww. That's kind of cute. Ok I guess I should ask him before getting mad.
- +1 y
Haha it wasn't cute when I pulled off the wrapping paper. I was an ungrateful bitch thinking he was saying I should be doing the vacuuming.
But yeah, sometimes we assume the worst and they have just thought of some weird way it could be meaningful
I love the vacuum cleaning now by the way 😜 He does an excellent job of the couch!
Asker+1 yHahaha, girl! I think as women we can't help but be ungrateful bitches sometimes. We think so much differently than men do... I'll talk to him. Thanks. ❤️
Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI think either you're making this up, or you're fat, do you even have a husband? Do you?
Just in case you do, he meant well, maybe it's an activity he wants to share with you, you can bitch about it, and by doing so you will be killing your marriage every day a little, until he's cheating on you with a girl he met at the gym, and you'll be asking in this very site the question: " why are men so unfaithful" , there's so many bad things happening, so much pain in the world, that someone caring enough to give you
A gift should be treasured, not critize, but do whatever you want, kill your marriage one day at time by being mad when your husband gets your a present, best of luck00 Reply
You have the right to feel however the fuck want, but your husband when he married you, he accepted your weight at the time, but he didn't agreed that you gain so much weight.

+1 yYou have the right to be upset, but if he is suggesting that you lose weight, that is probably one of the best ways to do so. Did you ever think that perhaps he is concerned for your health and it is not just about looks? If you have gained a significant amount of weight and he loves you, he should be concerned and want to try to help. That doesn't mean you cannot be upset about it. You should have a conversation about it and see what he says. Go from there.

+1 yWhy not use the membership and get a better, HEALTHIER, you for 2017. Even if this is a subtle hint from him, he wants the best for both of you. You can take that with anger, which will totally hurt your relationship, or be happy and let him be happy as well.

Asker+1 ySo because he thinks I need to be "healthier" I need to think the same about myself? That's bullshit.

You sound like a heavenly person to be around. Put down the cake and go for a run. Exercising also lifts your emotions up.
Asker+1 yI'd much rather have the cake. At least it won't laugh at me for trying to run. I couldn't care less what exercising does to be honest.
- +1 y
I'd get myself a new wife for Christmas honestly.
Asker+1 yGood thing I don't give a shit what you'd do
+1 yTo me this sounded like your husband wanted someone to workout with and go to the gym with him. Try it first, you might like it, who knows? There's all kinds of fitness equipment in a gym. Maybe they might have a pool you can swim in. If you really don't like to exercise, I can understand why you'd be upset. But what do you really want for a Christmas present?
10 ReplyWhy should you be upset? Did you explicitly tell him you don't like gym? Maybe from conversations with he concluded that you would like some other sport than you do now or you mentioned that you have people around you that go to the gym and its a good place for social contact. Be happy, because a gym membership is expensive, so its nice gift to get
10 Reply
+1 yYou got your Christmas present four days before actual Christmas? Wut?
I think that depends - have you two talked about your weight as an issue before? Or talked about getting healthier in the New Year? If so I wouldn't be too fuzzed about it, especially if he's paying for it. Free yoga mayne.10 Reply
+1 yLol, my dad bought my step mum a gym membership for her 50th Birthday, and it was when we threw a big party for her and everyone was asking what he got her 😂😂 he said he didn't even think of it in that way, he just thought since he had one it could be something they could do together.
00 ReplyWhat? NO! That's awesome! One less reason not to get yourself to your healthiest version of yourself. Say thanks and get to the gym! He's giving you something to help you be the best and healthiest you that you can be.

Asker+1 yThere's no way in hell I'm going to the gym. And he knows that.
Asker+1 yI have a lot of self esteem issues and anxiety. And I know that going to the gym where EVERYONE can see me working out isn't going to work.
- +1 y
Why? It should be motivation. Honestly I used to be a personal trainer for a few years specializing in pre/post natal, women and kids.. If your worries people will make fun of you in the gym stop! They will be more encouraging then you would think. The entire point of the gym is to help people get and stay healthy which is what we all need. Don't write it off completely before you try it. If it doesn't work for you so be it but at least you tried that's all that matters.
Why don't you return the favour? Get him some breath mints, some hair dye, some anti ageing cream and some medication for flatulence. See if he appreciates the self improvement hints too, lol

https://images.memes.com/meme/92062000 ReplyI personally don't feel so; while I understand "the flip side" of the argument, the truth is society is basing their trends around fitness. so maybe he simply didn't know what to get you, or do you have a good friend that goes to the gym? so many options that all equate to the over analyzing of a simple gift.

Well, having read some of your responses, id look at it like this. Had i been giving the guy advice, id have told him to get you something different for Christmas AND get you the membership if he ws insistent on it.
It is not entirely selfish of him to get you this gift. You sound like you are struggling with some things in your life right now which happens to most everyone at one time or another. It sounds to me like he is wanting to help you take a step up... and well he may not be the best at figuring out how to do that, but it is intending to give you a step up. Where you should be upset is if you doesn't care about you or your health and happiness at all. Try to see his side in this as a life partner. He wants to see you happy and healthy. THere is nothing wrong with that. He could have done it better sure, but you getting mad about it will not help him or you. I hope it works out for you.

+1 yHe has the right to care about your health.
32 Reply- +1 y
And he can enforce that right ;)
- +1 y
He may be thinking about you in long term and perhaps he is worried for your health in older age.
On a lighter note, this is typical behaviour of a wife who is not too confident on how she looks:
Wife: "Honey, how do I look in this dress? I feel [such and such] Part is not looking perfect."
Husband has 2 options:
1) "Yeah, I know what you mean. Your love handles are getting exaggerated"
Result: husband sleeps on the couch.
2) "No my love. You look perfect".
Result: Wife: "You are just saying to get it off your hands. You never take interest. I like the other dress.". Indeed, she wears the other one that she did not even show to the husband.
Indirectly, the question is related to this problem.
