If an ex asks "do you ever wish things had turned out differently?" In a conversation, what would you think she is referring to?

She had previously been talking about jobs we had each had so I answered in the context of how things would be different if I had gone for a different career. But I'm not sure whether that's the context she was asking about.

At the time I basically just said along the lines of "it's hard to compare my current situation to a hypothetical one" but linked it to a job offer I didn't go through with a couple years back.

If you're still interested ask her about her life. Its okay not to jump into previous relationship talk while after break up. If you still like her keep the conversation open.

Problem is we only talk face to face, her boyfriend isn't keen on us being in contact due to our past. So we only talk if we ever happen to bump into each other. I did consider asking her to call me but if she takes that the wrong way it could be problematic

I didn't know she has a boyfriend. You should be civilized if she talks you can reply. If she contacts you a lot you say" hey you're in a relationship and I don't want to make a bad impression"
From your words I can see you're a respectful man. Don't let people play you around when they just feel like it. And no friendship after breakup. Never works

Yeah I get that, it's strange though as in an official sense it's always been a case of her not wanting to hang out or us not being able to message etc.. because she thinks I still have feelings for her. But this and a few other things kind of give the impression it could be a case that she still has a soft spot for me.

I’d say it’s both. You’re still interested in her based on what I’ve read here and it’s likely she may still have a soft spot if that’s the vibe you’re getting too.

I could go into great detail about lots of other times I've been given that impression but she's always denied having feelings for me.
