I recommend trying to identify WHY they make you think of your ex. If it's because they do something negative that reminds you of a negative quality or experience, I'd try to talk through it. If it's a positive quality that reminds you of the good things, I'd recommend working to equate that positivity with the more positive current love interest.

I think that if what they are doing makes you wish that you were with another relationship, then you should probably break up with them. But missing a past boyfriend/girlfriend I think is completely normal, and that it will probably happen with everyone.

If you're having these thoughts it means you already had made up your mind. When you're with someone you like you don't spend time wishing you were with an ex. It's best if you go but don't go back to your ex either. It's entirely possible that both your ex and current girlfriend weren't so great and you need to go and find someone new.

Some people miss the toxicity, the ride or die, the lack of boundaries, or cling to the idea that they can never be their true (awful) selves with anyone else...

And in a way it's true. A healthy partner won't tolerate bs, and the person subconsciously knows this. They'd rather 'go back' than work on themselves to be better partners

I mean, it would be so unfair to stay with someone while thinking about another, and they can probably sense when we're blanking out so that's just preparing to be the scummy ex of someone or the emotionally unfaithful spouse.
