My roommate had a psychotic break I called the police did I do the right thing?

On Friday Night my roommate had a psychotic break and didn't remember where or who anyone was she tried to jump out of a moving car, and hang herself in the bathtub. I wasn't there but my neighbor was. He said he never saw someone so out of it. I did not hear about this until Sunday. I sent her a support message and she didn't answer. I spent the night at my boyfriends and called the police in the morning because she didn't answer my texts I'm getting lots of mixed reactions on this. THoughts?

No one other than the police to go check on her? Someone should have stayed with her to look out for her health and well-being.
If no one else. Then a wellness check by police was probably a good idea.

usually if you call the police EMS comes. If you feel like they are a danger to themselves or others its a good idea

In my jurisdiction, the police have the authority to take a mentally ill person into custody and deliver them to the nearest treatment facility for an evaluation. When someone is psychtic, there is nothing a lay person can do to help the patient.

I’m not sure she’s had multiple breaks from reality. But I didn’t know her before

This is what is wrong with the health care system. Mentally ill people are not diagnosed and treated until they go out and kill somebody.

You did the right thing. There should be a better option. Only one US city sends out psychological help as team of first responders so far. So call the police till then. Are you in US?

Why don't you call an ambulance? They're set up to deal with that.

They were going to call but she told them she was fine and they had to honor her wishes.
