+1 yMy former boss helped me escape a toxic, unhappy work environment, and potentially saved me from being fired.
Before my current job, I worked in the physical therapy department here as a program coordinator. Loved my job, the environment, coworkers... it seemed like the type of job I'd retire from.
Until my boss warned me the director over the department, I'll call her "A," was unhappy with my performance. Even though everyone else, including the patients, loved my work and dedication.
Long story short, the manager warned me that after I returned from my vacation, A was going to have a "talk" with me. A talk that she had no input in. While she was not allowed to tell me the details, my manager encouraged me to, "look at other job options." I asked her how long had to "look for other jobs."
She said one month.
I took that as a blaring red flag and spent my week of vacation job hunting.
... I got a job offer a few days later.
Same hospital, but I'd be in another department, new (and better) management, and to an extent, a promotion as well considered my position!
When I came back from my vacation, I gave them my two weeks notice. My manager, now friend, was sad but very proud of me. And confirmed that I definitely did the right thing.
As for A, the director? She was completely indifferent to me leaving. I'm not sure what meeting she had in store for me, but I beat her to the punch!
But I definitely owe the manager: she knew what was coming and gave me the push to escape a bad situation.
I still speak to several of the employees in that department, including the girl that replaced me? Everyone's miserable, some people have quit, and even the manager is unhappy.11 Reply

u +1 yWhen I was visiting a friend down south when I was 17, I went with him to watch him get a tattoo, and I stepped outside the shop to have a smoke and saw an older lady having a mental breakdown in her car. I knocked on her window and asked if she wanted someone to talk to or a hug. She invited me to sit with her and she told me about how her ex has taken her kids off of her and that I was the same age as her oldest, and that her ex husband had brainwashed her kids. After having a lengthy chat and giving her a few hugs and reassuring her that when her kids are older they’ll see how awful their dad is, she cried and thanked me. She said she was planning to hurt herself because she didn’t know how to cope and she felt like a failure of a mother. I recommended some suicide hotlines to her, gave her another hug before getting out of her car. She smiled and waved before driving off. I hope she’s okay to this day and got her kids back in her life. I think of her every now and then.

Be careful. Sometimes these people are great at getting pity and empathy from other people, but you can never be sure if they are telling the truth.
You have a compassionate heart. But please be wary. Sometimes the people you try to help will bit the hand that feeds them. Firsthand experience. - +1 y
Completely agree with what you’re saying about being careful. I’ve experienced that aswell.
One my Bestfriends from college came through when I needed help the most. I was called to be in my first major Hollywood film which is called "The Dark Knight Rises" and they were filming it in Pittsburgh, PA. I was going to give up because I had no way of the to Pittsburgh because I live in Florida. My Male Bestfriend that lives currently in Georgia, drove 6hrs from his home and pick me up in Florida in then took me to Pittsburgh. Both of us were in the movie and we were famous over night. That moment in my life, I will never forget, we are brothers for life, and I will always have his back.

+1 yWhen I was in college, like most students I was broke. Well, one day I happened to scrape forty dollars together to get some food and other essentials. When I was checking out, a jolly old fella behind me told the cashier to put it on his tab. I kept thanking him and asked why, why would you do that for me? I still remember his words, "Because I feel blessed today. I'm not rich but today I feel very blessed and want someone else to feel that feeling. All I ask, is when you are able, do the same for someone else". I've done it a few times since that day.

I did. I always wondered why he felt blessed on that certain day. I never asked him but to this day I wonder why.

+1 yI worked for an electrician years ago. One day when my coworker and I was on our way to a job I got a call saying my dad passed away. My coworker called the boss and told him. He drove an hour to come get me and bring me back so I can be with my mom. He told me to take as much time as I needed. He paid me for my regular 60 hours a week for 2 months.

He was a great boss. He closed shop several times to take everyone on special outings, bought lunch for the whole crew multiple times, gave 2 weeks pay as bonus for Christmas. He even gave me a big raise so I can quit my second job.

Yeah he was a great boss. I'm still friends with him even though I'm his competition now.

+1 yThere are a bunch, but the first thing that came to mind was the time i helped a blind man find hot dog buns that were on special at a supermarket. Ell oh ell! It was kind of surreal. I was really expecting someone to jump out with a camera and interview me for “WWYD?”.

Honestly, I thought I would never forget, it was so epic and memorable and really hit me to the core in the moment. But I actually did forget. I only remember I thought I would remember, like those important dreams but then you wake up and they slip away.

He warned me a gang rival was in the area. It wasn't me he was looking to kill, but he was out to kill, and he got taken down before he could.

Me too
After my last attempt a cop fished me out and took me to the hospital psych ward where I was given a psychiatrist despite trying to get one for years prior and only ever being put on a wait list.

Only person to try and make me feel like I mattered but maybe he was just doing his job, I don't know but it was the only thing anyone's done for me. He sat with me for over an hour trying to figure who to contact since I don't have anyone, he was nice enough to contact my bosses and tell them I'd be out of work for a while but didn't say why, just that I was in an accident.
