Obviously if they had sex with a different person then she straight up cheated. But I think people fail to understand that you can be unfaithful in other ways that do not involve sex. For me, I just the first thing that comes to mind when I hear something like that is that I assume it means sex... but I ways ask more questions. Ultimately it is seldom any of my business if it does not directly affect me, so I keep an open mind before assuming too much of any of them.

In the end there is no way of ever really knowing the true facts, so it usually just makes me think that he was a bad boyfriend, or she is bad girlfriend... but ultimately it really means they just have relationship problems and it not my business.

Went with the second option. Cheating takes many forms, not just sex. All those forms do eventually lead to the sex stuff no matter how much she says he's just a friend or just a really nice guy if it doesn't get checked and have a stop put to it. The fact that John's girlfriend doesn't want to acknowledge that fact just means she'll keep fighting for that right... and then eventually it will lead to her cheating.

He knows it. She should know it. The other guys know it. Even her friends know it. Her Mom and Dad know it. ... But she's going to play stupid until it happens. Maybe try to hide it, until it happens again. Eventually, it's happened so much that everyone that knew it gives up and accepts she's just a slut. 😂

I agree that the second option is equal to cheating, but from a purely linguistic point of view I use the word cheating only if there is sex involved, so I was confused when I heard someone say that “John” had been cheated on, while I think his girlfriend was just flirting with others

Some people make up their own definitions of the word 'cheating' to define this or that. Usually, it's the cheater that does it. But at the bottom line, anything that hurts the relationship is a form of cheating the relationship. There is financial cheating, emotional cheating, the flirting kind of cheating, as well as the "no duh" sex kind of cheating.

I always break it down like this... ever been a kid playing tag with another kid, and they start making up rules just so they win? Just so they always win as much as they want, but you always lose? That kid is a cheater.

Here's the thing, the first impression I would get will be "John's girlfriend had sex with another person". But it could be other things as the second option describes too. Cheating isn't just sex. Showing the interest in another person romantically is cheating in my book.

Thank you! Same comment as below, for me “morally” that is also cheating, but I would use the expression “he has been cheated on” only if there was sex. Otherwise I would say “johns girlfriend was unfaithful”. But I am not a native English speaker so maybe I’m getting it wrong

Having faith is thinking that something is true based on an assumption.

So anyone scientifically minded is unfaithful, it really has nothing to do with cheating.

I think the only reason people use the word unfaithful in that context, is becase religious people assume a god exists, and that said god disapproves of cheating, so by cheating, your are losing your faith in that god's teachings, therfor, it is "unfaithful".

But for an atheist like me, thats all nonsense. The reason I don't cheat is because it's cruel, not because a god told me not to.
