3.1K opinions shared on Relationships topic. Music that you don't understand the lyrics to is fine. I can't understand half the words in Rock the Casbah, and that's in my native language. As for watching shows, subtitles work, and through time we'll be able to struggle through another person's language. My sister had a 90-minute-long conversation with a woman in Italy who didn't know English, and my sister didn't know Italian. By knowing how words are formed you can get by until you become more familiar. Here's an example: dedos is fingers in Spanish. And dedos de pie is toes in Spanish. Knowing this by someone pointing to them and saying the word, I know that the similarity is digits. So we can connect on that. Other words may sound similar like the Latin word obesus which means fat, but sounds like obese. So drawing on a good command of your language, as long as the other language isn't wholly different (like an Asian language to an English speaker) you can get by in the beginning. Also English is the universal pidgin language and almost everyone outside of English-speaking countries learns ESL in school.

+1 yA LOT of shows are translated in subs now a days, broski.
play it in English so you can understand and in her language for subs so she can understand.
have your phone out with google translate when you wanna say something.
honestly? Sometimes it’s better when you don’t have words to express yourself.
Using my body and face to express myself is one of my favorite ways of being witnessed.

Bodily motions is a good way to express one's self. That's a universal language.

I heard some songs in different languages that I do not understand and I was still able to feel what the song was about. I could tell. Once the song is over, I ask them what was it about, translate it or I just google it. Problem solved. 🤷🏻♀️ Language can be learned. So, I'd learn his language to be able to communicate better in future.

when I watch movies in Spanish... I do laugh like " jajaja "
and not my usual "haha"
m +1 y@NathanDavis LOL! That's interesting... I guess you're one of the people who picks up things subconsciously, lol.

I wondered how it would work by just talking. There's got to be some sort of connection or it just wouldn't work, right?

+1 yWatching shows is easy. Turn on the subtitles in one language and the actual audio in the other. For music, no one really pays attention to the lyrics anyway... it's the tune and beat that are important.
10 Reply subtitles for shows/movies
if he cares about listening to music he understands than i'd just listen to music in their language since i dont care if i understand the lyrics (already listen to a lot of foreign music anyways)

I listen to some foreign music also. Don't know the words but the music is good.

+1 yHis native language was Chinese, mine is Georgian, we communicated in English. We did okay, sometimes I was watching Chinese movies and just guessing things from the body language, sometimes he did same for Georgian movies, mostly we watched in English.
10 Reply 1.4K opinions shared on Relationships topic. That might be part of my life soon. 😂😂😂😂
I could just look for subtitles in his language. Or I could try to translate as many words as possible.
But of course, I couldn't date someone I couldn't communicate with. We might not be native speakers of the same language, but we must have a language in common.

+1 yI try once, doesn't work really well for me since I’m introvert and I like to talk a lot, I can talk all day without stopping and we have to communicate using google translate which is so tiring and confusing for me. So i decided to just stay as friend and try to teach him.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 ywell, if you can read fast enough watch shows with English captions at the bottom of the tv. Music is trickier. I personally wouldn't date someone with a language barrier since I don't want to feel like I'm playing a game sureaids every time I try having a conversation with them.

Talking would be the hardest part. Would have to keep a translation app handy.

+1 yThis is why I have to date someone who is fluent in English. I've had some international exes who thankfully were practicing English since childhood so although they were bilingual, we never had an issue when it came to music/shows because they knew both

There's always body language.
Music is good in any language. You can watch a movie in you partners language and read subtitles in your language.

Music is good in any language. I used to listen to k-pop, German techno, Jamaican, and Hispanic music. Had no clue what they said but it was good.

I used to listen to a song called Tione. I don't remember who sings it. I tried to Google it.

Perhaps it is this one. Take Responsibility 4 Everything - little Tione

Nah. The song was in English the best they could. It was a song about a woman kidnapped by yakuza, tortured, beaten, then her body dumped under a grate near a factory. Sad song.

True. There's very few universal words that all understand. The main one "hi"

Some men have taken the efrort to learn the language of the area so they have access to the women, culture and environment. Its literally unlocking a new map to explore, I think its rather exciting to force yourself to learn a new language, if push comes to shove you can now survive in another part of the world

I have been wanting to learn another language. It's better to have someone teach me than from a book. The books and classes will teach you the proper words of the language. Then when you use it to talk to someone they look at you oddly. Lol.
- +1 y
I think both book and dialogue is useful because you want to know what your saying and how to say it the way the locals do.
Its kind of like clicking for the definition from google and hear a generic voice say Tomato, Toe-May-Toe, but if you say it like your stuck in caramel people will think your from the short bus, also dialogues include slang that the book won't have - +1 y
The slang is the main part. That's what the dialogs will really be helpful
+1 yI don’t know about the music or movies but I communicated happily with a lot of foreign customers with google translate.

I'm going to see if that will work for me to learn another language.
