I know a lot of it has to do with how long you've been together, so I'll say your first year of dating. Your first Christmas/birthday together. When my wife and I had our first Christmas, I actually bought her a gold necklace I knew she would like but she was always talking about wanting an upright mixer, she loves to bake. So, that's what I got her. She was sooo happy and even said, "you know, Wally, you actually got me something I wanted. You're the only boyfriend that has done that". An FYI, I didn't realize how much mixers cost!

I like gifts that he/she thought of on their own. That makes it much more special. So I'm with you on this. Buying something that they out thought into is way better than something I've mentioned. Much more of a surprise too! I do that with friends' birthdays. I don't get outta control with it but buy something thoughtful. Just a little gesture to remind a friend how much they mean to me. Great question!

I'd always rather a gift i will use, than gifts i won't.
I bought my wife tires for our first Christmas together. If you think about it, what someone really needs or wants, is usually expensive, that's why they don't have it.
