Why would an ex like/comment on your social media posts but when you message them directly in response to it, they ignore it?

It's a game. Don't even bother wasting your time trying to figure it out. If they're an ex, they're an ex. Move on. Even better, block them so they don't have an opportunity to keep up with these games. They likely just want to get a reaction, and here you are giving it to them. Ignore and move on.

Asking a question here is not giving them a reaction since I haven’t reacted with them.
I don’t feel the need to block, if they want to stalk me they can. I already ignore their posts.

I haven’t ever messaged before, it’s always been them doing it. Just to clarify the context here. I have been avoiding my them more than they have me.

Well, now this taught you you can go back to avoiding them, didn't it.
With the exception of the possibility that you haven't given this guy time to respond. Women are Notorious for expecting guys to respond right away and judging them for not. If it's been more than a couple days then you got a right to be offended. Anything less, No.

It has been longer, and I know him, he’d always respond the same day if not hour so I knew what he was doing, I don’t need to justify it. Of course I’ve gone back to avoiding him but I don’t need advice, I just want to know why he might’ve done it, hence the question.

Well I'd have two know both of you to answer that. I don't know the dynamics of your used-to-be relationship. He probably did it to test you reaction. Backed up by the fact that he didn't respond to your message. Maybe he was lonely, maybe he was bored, maybe he Saud to one of his friends "watch this, I can make this woman react". Again I don't know. As you said "I know him", I (me) don't know him. You'd be able to answer this better than us "WHY".

Yeah I know that, I’m just interested in others guesses based on their own intuition from lived experiences of their own (taken in the right context as earlier stated). He knows I’m not the type to chase. I think I’ve demonstrated that time and time again now.
