I would find it difficult to believe that type of DNA evidence is even possible, but they were scientific studies so I assume it is possible. Therefore, in the Stone Age and we still have our Stone Age brains, if most men had mates, half of the men didn't produce children that survived to reproduce. In the Stone Age, half the children died within the first year, and many of those that didn't die in the first year never lived to become adults.
