I generally don't think so. A lot of people point out how men commit suicide at much higher rates than women but women attempt suicide 3 times more than men the last time I checked and are generally much more prone to self-harm. Men are just more successful at actually killing themselves when they try.

So this argument that women are less depressed and less anxious because women support each other doesn't make much sense to me since women still attempt suicide three times more than men.

Personally, I really think more men and women need to be taught how to think positively and productively these days (it definitely would have helped me enormously if I was taught this when younger; I had to study it for myself). It doesn't matter so much how much or how little social support someone receives if they're prone to think very negatively all the time, and someone who thinks very positively can generally be very cheerful even in their own company without so much support.

Men who aren't taught well can have a bad tendency to suppress their negative emotions like anger and sadness, especially sadness. Women don't as much. Yet both who aren't taught well suffer tendencies towards very negative thinking, and repressing or eagerly shedding tears, or repressing or having fits of rage, doesn't really impact mental health nearly as much as learning to think more positively. That's not a gendered issue as I see it; both sexes can be deeply inclined towards interpreting events in the most negative of ways until they're taught how not to do this.

@GuyAnswersGirls123. No. Men actually want to die. Women want attention.

@KrakenAttackin I could see that as well. Although I figure both suffer from negative thoughts. I really think the likes of Stoicism, Buddhism, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Logotherapy offer the ultimate cures.

I don't think the cure is to encourage men to be "more emotional" as a lot of women seem to think, whatever that means. They are being extremely emotional when they commit suicide. Or men to support each other more the same way women often support each other, since I don't think offering comfort and sympathy and agreeing with everything each other say actually solves the negative thinking patterns. It might offer relief like a nurse to a patient but not like a doctor actually diagnosing and curing the root cause.

@GuyAnswersGirls123. I agree with most of what you say. I do believe men need to support each other and at least check in on each other often. Connectedness is a great preventer of suicide.

@KrakenAttackin For sure. I think if we support each other more the way men do like offering solutions, reframing each other's negative and self-defeating thought patterns, I think that would help for sure. We could all be like therapists to each other. I often thought even "man up" meant that, even though it's a callous shorthand. I always interpreted it not like, "Stop crying! Stop whining!" but more like, "Think positively, think productively, find a way to solve this problem instead of dwelling on it."

@KrakenAttackin Logotherapy is something I think can be especially helpful for men. It focuses on pursuing meaning and purpose and responsibility and an antidote to nihilism:
Are men more depressed than women?

I'm not the biggest fan of Jordan Peterson but his psychotherapeutic approach also emphasizes Logotherapy and if he isn't exaggerating his clinical success, it sounds like he saved a lot of men from potential suicide.

@GuyAnswersGirls123. I guess it isn't a stretch to say purpose gives resilience. This is why so many men stay in marriages with awful women, for sake of their children.

@KrakenAttackin Responsibility does tend to give us more reasons to endure even if they're unpleasant ones!

I don't think so, it's a joke. Personally do like talking to women about my problems and stuff more. But I think that's just me. I can get along with guys well just hanging out but it has been more difficult for me to build a more deep connection. Even guys that I was pretty close with it doesn't feel the same I don't know.

Yes, it's actually known more women have the highest rates of attempted suicide, more men have the count of successful suicide.

According to statistics women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression as men are. But that's just diagnosis.

You could make the argument that all women are quasi-mentally ill. While men have a tendency to push feelings deep inside there chest, lock it away and not deal with it.

In short, I don't think this question can really be answered.

No, I think mere men are. They have to fight the darkness every day. But they’re typically better equipped to deal with it.

Yes but most just suck it up. Thoreau wrote that most men lead lives of quiet desperation.

Men are less likely to get help or be open with their feelings, so probably yes.
