Why do people speculate and gossip a lot about a person but don’t even try to talk to them?

Many people especially at work take offense that I don’t approach them to talk about trivial personal stuff but they themselves never try to strike up conversations with me either? They end up watching me interact with others, follow me around to spy and speculate a lot about me aka gossip but don’t try to find out themselves if there is any truth to it. Why?

I had a problem at my old job where I was faster and more active then the other employees and there was one who viewed me as a threat to her position cause I was over 30 years younger than her, so she tried to ruin my reputation at work by looking for excuses to criticize me and saying bad things about me to her friends in the hope they would hate me just as much as she did. When she realized I had flaws she did not have and was not perfect at my job like she thought, she left me alone.

Because the most interesting stuff to gossip about is the most awkward to actually ask someone about. I'm not much of a talker, so I wouldn't spread the rumors myself, but I have ears.

It's not really any of my business how you conduct yourself in your personal life, but I'd still find it quite interesting to hear that you're unfaithful to your partner.

I actually had to block all my coworkers on social media they keep manipulating me. even when I do nothing they make up stuff.

I just do my work keep away from them
