What would you do if your partner became a vampire?

Mind you, they have the same personality as before.

This was the theme of a short story my wife wrote - a woman falls ill and dies. She then unexpectedly wakes up and stumbles back home to her husband and child.

It looks like a miracle, but soon they find out she can't eat any food (she throws it up) and the sunlight burns her. Eventually when the kid cuts himself with scissors, the woman discovers this is what she can eat, so the husband feeds her his own blood.

It doesn't end well. There are other vampires and they aren't as peaceful as the mother, they kill people to feed. The woman leaves her family to protect them and joins the flock.

Eventually the humans undestand what's going on and lynch and massacre the vampires (they aren't powerful beings like in the movies), among them the mother of the story. They nail them to the walls so the sun can burn them. The husband is part of this mob and discovers his wife nailed to the wall, still alive but agonizing in the sunlight, so he stakes her with a pole to end her suffering.

My wife had the idea for this story from a dream/nightmare she had - she dreamed she was dead but still moving and talking, and for some reason she wasn't allowed back home or to talk to me or our children, she could only look from the windows.

The worst thing for her wasn't being a living dead, but the fear of being separated from her family, and this was the main theme of her story.

The vampire, as we know them today, was basically pinned down by four nineteenth century books (or three and one short story, if you're more pedantic). Dracula everyone knows and generally regards highly (with reason; it's a VERY good book that's had six bazillion adaptations, which are generally good or better on their own, but not good adaptations, since it's a slow-burn work of rising tension, which doesn't translate to movies or video games very well); Carmilla, which many people know and was also a solid book (and is not, as some people would have you believe, screaming about lesbians on every page); Vampyre, inspired by a poem of Byron's, that a handful of people know about; and Varney the Vampire, which only like six people have ever read.

Dracula's a monster, who was a powerful evil wizard BEFORE he became a vampire; Carmilla's a beast, an unnatural animal controlled by instinct; Lord Ruthven (from the short story) is just a blackguard corrupting and destroying for yuks. Varney is the most interesting of the four, since he's the most human. Indeed, there are parts that indicate he might not actually BE a vampire, and just faking the whole thing, and he gives out lots of fake histories of himself, to be more intimidating.

His book was first published in the form of penny dreadfuls (basically the precursor to comic books), and is a disjointed mess; plotlines come up out of nowhere and are never explained; intriguing things happen and aren't mentioned again, despite being farther from the ending than the entire length of the Bible (I'm not exaggerating on that, either). Basically the entire last 40% of the book is Varney 1. finding a young maiden, 2. persuading her to marry him, 3. getting interrupted or found out at the last second, 4. fleeing for his unlife, and 4. starting over from step one. This happens four or five times.

Obviously the husband should search for her with the intention of begging her to turn him into a vampire and a whole side story could be about how he keeps it a secret because he knows everyone he tells would also look for her to beg to be turned into a vampire. That's the one thing that has always bothered me about vampire stories: roughly 100% of men would like to be one if it was a real possibility and no vampire story uses that fact to their advantage.

My boyfriend says unless I can maintain my sanity then he would have to kill me. I told him in most vampire lore they don't have sanity because their demonic. Except in Buffy where you can find a witch to make you have a soul to not be demonic. We won't mention Twilight vampires lol.

Nice story, I don't know about all that though, I think the Zombie Apocalypse will come before that. We need to figure that out first 🙏🏾😇💪🏾💯. But isn't it garlic, Holy water, and bright light's 🤣🔥. I watched a movie like that and it was made in Mexico, very good movie.

In most stories the character/personality of a vampire DOES change. They become more self-centered, lose any affection for their own offspring, only have loyalty for whoever turned them into a vampire. In that scenario, she's getting dumped (or not re-picked up after dying).

But let's say the vampire still had the same personality as before they died and was basically harmless. I would treat them the same as before.

I'd turn too. I don't mind immortality. In addition our current house has a lock down shelter that is fully stocked with everything we might need to survive various problems. Even has extra blood bags for medical issues that might come up. Safely stored and labeled so they can be disposed of when they go bad.

Honestly I'd probably make a bunch of dumb vampire jokes involving a fake Transylvania accent. And she'd get pissed off and accuse me of stereotyping vampires, and I'd tell her to stop being so sensitive, which would piss her off even more, and we'd have a huge fight and break up.

And she'd wind up dating a vampire who really DID have a fake-sounding Transylvania accent, and she would never want me to meet him because she was afraid I'd hear that accent and start laughing.

Go watch  Shiki . Only good vampire anime out there. It is pretty much like what your wife wrote but more and better. Not even joking. Pretty much all the things you described happen in it.  As for me... meh. Not bothered. I'm already basically undead.

It depends on what "vampirism" entails: If I get immortality and superpowers like Dracula or other powerful vampires in fiction then I would have her turn me. If I am still just as weak as I am now but with the additional burdens of needing to drink blood and avoid the sun I wouldn't want to be turned.
