What is the difference between, hangout, dating, being in a relationship/boyfriend & girlfriend?

There are levels to it!

1. Hanging out - Very platonic, you're just spending time together
2. Texting - Spending extra time with them, one on one. You're learning details about them and whether you'll be compatible
3. Seeing each other - Here you reveal you like each other, now you're seeing if it'll work out. Planning dates
4. Dating - Everything in between the confession and the relationship. This stage shouldn't exceed 6 months, at the very most. Might include sex but always includes several dates
5. Situationship [Optional] - If the dating stage exceeds 6 months, you reach the confusing question of what the hell you even are
6. Relationship - Labelling the relationship, calling them your partner
7. Roommates
8. Engaged
9. Married

I often hear people say they're in the "talking stage" which in my opinion falls under the second point as well

What about if a guy says that they like spending time with you and is still willing to drive , 40 minutes to your house when you can't drive. Wants to do date like activities (eating out, movies, etc.) and refuses to allow me to pay, but says he isn't ready for a relationship cause he has a lot going on right now, but also says definitely possible for it to become something later just not now. Doesn't want to loose what is there. Says he wants to keep things the same as boyfriend/girlfriend just without the title. Both know and have told the other we feel the same way about each other and remains the same.

Sounds like a textbook case of commitment issues, which are the root of most of these relationships. He's 'not ready to date', strike one, 'doesn't want to lose what's there', strike two, and wants to date you just without calling you his girlfriend? Yeah... he's a bit of a mess. I think you should ask yourself if you're willing to be this guy's option or his partner. He should want to commit to you, if he doesn't, he's not boyfriend material.

Hanging out or seeing someone is when you're getting to know them, gone on a few dates. Dating is when you have been talking and seeing each other for some time. A situationship is when you've been dating for months but haven't formalized. And boyfriend/girlfriend is when one asks the other for a formal relationship and the other person accepts or both talk about it and decide they want to take that step.

Hangout - talking only. No banging
Dating - banging, occasional overnights, no trips.
Relationships - regular overnights, occasional trips

As far exclusivity goes, that's even more personalized. For me, I expect it from the hangout phase. She won't be LTR material if she messes that up.

Both know and have said we feel same way about each other. Have gone out to resteraunts and movies together. Been to each other's house and met each other's parents. Were "official" but he said he felt he rushed things and says he still wants things to be the same just without boyfriend/girlfriend title "commitment".
