My boyfriend broke up with me over materialistic things, did the gifts matter more than the relationship?

My boyfriend (now ex ) and I have been together for 1 year almost 2. A year ago I went out of the country due to a family emergency. I bought him gifts & even bought him merch from his favorite artists. I sent Daniel the gifts through the mail on December, so it will be a late Christmas gift and birthday gift. Since his birthday was on the month of January. They arrived by mid January and since he wasn’t home to receive the package, the mail carrier left him a note stating that he could go pick up the package and pay. Daniel doesn’t have a job, so I had to deposit money in his account to go get the package. I didn’t have money, but he told me to give him 3k for everything, since he asked me to get him a bike. So he gave me the price range.
Daniel kept insisting me on sending him the money to go the the stuff and would say that I played with emotions and illusions, when he asked me for half of the things.
A few days ago he broke up with me and blocked me , but the only way I would show him I wanted the relationship and was going to change due to my lies of giving him money. I had to give him 100 I only gave him 50. So fast forward to today, he got mad at me and things got heated. Daniel told me he was never going to have the stuff, I lied about giving him 3k or 2.5k when I don’t have the money. I barely make enough. Later on, Daniel says I lied to him, he doesn’t want to be with me anymore, and just left and blocked me.
why would he leave me over him not having gifts? Was he only with me for materialistic things.
