Why is a man more likely to confess to cheating than a woman?

Out of the few cases I've heard about a cheater that comes clean without getting caught, is usually a man confessing. Meanwhile the woman usually wants to keep that a secret forever and rarely confesses unless someone else finds out and she's given no option.

Why is that? I know of two other men that confessed. Even my own brother once came clean to a past ex girlfriend. No one caught him, no one blackmailed him. He simply admitted it and obviously got dumped. He didn't fight to win her back. He learned from it.

Bottom line… There's no excuse for cheating! I don't care how bad your relationship is, if it's that bad, then just end the relationship, and THEN look for somebody else! Cheeting is not just a betrayal of the other person, it's a betrayal of the relationship. Given that both parties are equal partners within the relationship, in a way cheating is a self-destructive behavior, which creates a dynamic wherein the cheater, is in the sense betraying, not just their partner, but also themselves!

Most men don't want their lives to be any more complicated than it has to be. This is true even if they screw up, or even if they selfishly cheat on purpose - they soon regret the complications that such behavior brings. What if he's out with his wife/girlfriend and the side piece is there? What if he's out somewhere with the side piece and his wife/girlfriend, or someone she's close to, sees them? And those are just a few examples.

Most guys would rather take the loss and move on then to maintain the lie - with all the complications - forever.

Women are much more comfortable lying and for the long term. So many women are already lying to themselves about lots of things that they aren't too bothered about other lies. And they are usually desperate to hold on to anything and everything that they feel they "worked for" and will rarely just take the loss - until the situation becomes so huge that the loss is huge and totally unavoidable. Fani Willis is a good example - she's still lying and trying to avoid jail, but everyone knows she's headed that way. She will ultimately get a much bigger punishment because she just wouldn't confess at the beginning.

I think it's because men sleeping around is generally more normalized in western culture (that whole attitude of a men sleeping with several different people means he's got game, but a woman doing the same means she's immoral). I think that double standard feeds a little bit into men being more comfortable/feeling fewer consequences when confessing to cheating. Just a guess though.

Could be other reasons, or it could be that your experience isn't actually representative of the real statistics. (There also are statistics that men just cheat more in general, possibly in part for the same reason I just stated, so if you assume a similar rate of confession, then of course more men would be confessing more often.)

I’m not excusing it and cheating is wrong and most cheaters of either sex are cowards. Women have a lot more to loose though and it can be dangerous for the man to find out. Women have been beaten, killed, etc for cheating.

A lot of women are with a man not because they genuinely love him. It’s for protection, utility, money, etc. When you don’t genuinely love someone you tend to cheat on them.
