I agree everyone pretty much has 'narcissistic traits' within themselves. My therapist said she thought my mother is a narcissist (something my sister had also said to me in the past) and I looked it up and yes my mother has - or has had - all the traits listed. But I could point out a few that applied to myself too. Which wasn't nice. But like, some could be learned behaviour from my mother? Or maybe as you say - they are just traits. Some of which happen to be applied to narcissistic disorder?
I think with social media there is a huge increase in people seeking validation and/or belittling other people and feeding their own egos which has increased awareness of traits used to describe narcissists. And that's why it's thrown around more. Plus it might get a reaction. Like calling someone a bitch or slut used to be a bigger insult...

So, are you implying everyone who is calling their partners for narsisist are it themselves - and in the same say it is a rare condition. You're here calling others narsisist - does that now mean you are one?
There is a difference in between narcissism and having a narstisic disorders, you can call out narcisim within indivuals - without giving them a disorder. Tho I do agree, you English speakers throw out a lot of words out to easily without giving shits about it's meaning and the consequences of what y'all say.

Yeah and I think the reason is that people would rather label someone objectively unlikable (which they are if they have this clinical diagnosis) than admit that they just have some personal antipathy. And I think that marks a general decline of empathy in society. People seem to be empathetic when they find it beautiful and it improves their personal social standing but not otherwise.

Narcissist is one of those words that get thrown around improperly so often that people (I think) lose understanding of. Psychopath. Sociopath. Narcissist. Gaslighting. Triggered. Anxiety. All three words have specific defined meanings and a simple google search falls far short of the actual definition of the DSM-5-TR.

Hey there, fabulous humans! 🌟 It's true, "narcissist" is thrown around like confetti at a party these days. It might feel like it's just the latest trendy label for when relationships get rocky. Sure, everyone’s got a sprinkle of narcissistic traits, but an actual narcissist is a different ball game. And let’s face it, calling someone a narcissist might just be deflecting personal issues! 😏 Let's embrace self-awareness and compassion, not labels. ❤️

For sure, the problem is that Narcissistic Personality Disorder is an actual psychological condition... But it's not as common as the word is being used.. which is problematic because people who actually have the disorder get overlooked as just 'one more narcissistic'.
And it's a big disorder, it's classed up there as one of the "3 big evils" (not sure what the actual term used is, I know this in french).. the 3 being: Psychopathy, Machiavelism, and Narcissism
It's not something to spit out so carelessly 🤦🏻♀️
Narcissists are a real menace to those who deal with them personally, they ruin the lives of those who are closest to them and even pass down the trouble down generations... I know that first hand in many ways
You can find it on Google there is a questionnaire with the 30-40 traits of narcissists, and checking off a certain percentage of those traits confirms if you're dealing with an actual narcissist.
10 ReplyI disagree with that as a blanket statement. Calling someone a narcissist or pointing out narcissistic behaviours doesn't necessarily mean you are one yourself. Yes some people definitely use it as an ego boost or for victimization for themselves, but as you said it's very rare to be a full blown narcissist.

Yeah, I agree. I see people all the time who say they are an empath and they are a magnet for Narcissists. To them is seems like NPD is bigger then covid.

Yea it’s like a new word that people tend to use more often these days , Bottom line most people just can’t take accountability for their own selfish actions and behavior , it’s always someone else’s fault but never their own. My ex started calling me a Narcissist and I just laugh and tell her to look in the mirror before calling anyone a narcissist because you have no room to talk whatsoever, I wasn’t the one that ruined our relationship , you are the one that chose to be selfish and never taken accountability for your selfish actions and behavior, so you can call me a narcissist all you want because it means nothing to me knowing you are the selfish one. So whatever I would tell her to defend myself against her criticism she would say I was a narcissist

Finch,
Most goofs think that divorce is horrible. Yeah, sure... just like a cure for cancer is horrible. No one wants that! One thing that all humans have in common, is that we're all humans. We make mistakes. I told the counselor that it's not fun living the life of two cardboard cut-outs. She said that was the most profound statement she's ever heard. I didn't mean for it to be profound, I was just telling it as it is.
A man and wife that are invisible to each other, is not exactly the fairy tale dream.

Maybe the person isn't a full blown narcissist, however, they may have narcissistic tendencies and believe it or not, a lot of people do have them.
I used to read quite a bit about them and one thing for sure is they don't have empathy for people. They just don't have the capacity for it and other traits as well.
If you are with a true narcissist you'd better head for the hills!!00 Reply- Anonymous(18-24)1 mo
And it's being used incorrectly because it's a psychiatric diagnosis, not just some random quality people have because the seem selfish to some other person. The same way 'surreal' is constantly misused, it's a specific artistic and literary style, not just some word for 'amazing.'
00 Reply Narcissistic behavior has been happening and engrained into US society…. Based around selfishness and non-empathy. Hell, it has been around even in advertising…. Burger King : have it YOUR way. We even have the ultimate narcissist as president. Society runs better when we lift others up and are selfless.
00 Reply3.6K opinions shared on Relationships topic. I haven't dude noticed this. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these people have absolutely no idea what they're talking about since they don't even know the diagnostic criteria for narcissism or the underlying theoretical concepts of narcissism. It's just another pop term at this point.
00 ReplyNarcissist is still a little word. I have been called potential rapist by a 2 middle aged women when me an my friend were buying wonder woman figurine.
many heavy words are thrown nowaday without any thoughts00 Reply- 1 mo
well narcissism is a trait and NPD is adisorder, so they can be used differently. like "depressed" can mean a state of mind you're in rather than like the disorder
but yeah the word is overused lol00 Reply 6K opinions shared on Relationships topic. There are a lot of words being thrown around these days. Misogynist, racist, narcissists all sorts of stuff. Eventually nobody pays any attention to it.

It's like the boy that cried wolf. Pretty soon no one hears him.
But my pet peeve is "Reverse Racism." What?
I thought I would exercise this morning, but I ended up reverse exercising.
Next time you're having a romantic dinner with the wifey, I want you to tell her you reverse hate her. She will love to hear that. 😄
I think many people have some narcissistic traits but that doesn’t necessarily means that they have a narcissistic personality. It’s good to recognize the differences, some people generalize these traits.

Real narcissists that don't want accountability want to deflect attention by making the word seem overused.
