Have you ever proposed marriage and been rejected, or received a proposal and then rejected it?

Question

I proposed to my now-wife on Friday, March 10, 2023 around 6:30 pm in the Bonefish Grill in Gainesville, Florida. Just like in the movies from the 1930's and 1940's, I got down on one knee the middle of that very crowded restaurant, make a few very brief comments, and then asked. . . while the restaurant manager (who knew my plan in advance) video'ed the event. I have no idea what I would have done if she had said "no," and it was my good fortune that she agreed to become Ms. OlderAndWiser.

Have you ever proposed and been rejected, or received a proposal and rejected it? Did the rejection ultimately get reversed, and the proposal was accepted?

Looking back on that experience, do you think the rejection was the right response? If so, why? Do you look back with regret and wish it had not ended with rejection?

I proposed to my wife two months in, she accepted reluctantly and broke it off two months later.

After we worked out our issues, she made the proposal herself and we got married three months later. Now we are three and a half years in and extremely happy!

I never been rejected but I have rejected 2 girls’ that I was dating , they both wanted to get married fast which to me was a big No , considering I really didn’t know them that well. The one girl wanted to get married after the first time we had sex and telling me she wants to have babies and get married and buy a home together , I was like damn did I fuck you that good lol , now you want to marry me? I declined her offer and said No way , and I never saw her again after that , the other girl was very clingy to me and possessive of me , having sex with her was the worst thing I did , because this girl started acting like she owned me after I fucked her. She was clearly desperate to get married to me after we dated for a few weeks , we were in a restaurant together and she asked me to marry her and pulled out her deceased fathers’ ring for me to wear. I looked at her like she was crazy considering we weren’t even boyfriend and girlfriend yet , we were just dating and having sex. She said I fell in love with you the second I laid eyes on you and that’s why I want to marry you. I did think it was sweet , but I said it’s way to soon , we haven’t even been together that long for me to even consider marrying you. I’m sorry but not at this time , she ended up staying with me , but she was pissed and started being rude and disrespectful to me because I said No to her , the girl clearly lost her mind and she actually chased me with a knife , I got away and called the cops on her. Never saw her again after that. This all occurred in my early 20’s years. i didn’t marry my wife until her and I were together 5 years and we already made 2 babies together before I even considered marrying her lol Now that I am separated from my wife , I don’t think I will ever get married again at least for a long ass time if ever again . Unless I meet an absolutely amazing girl that I see eye to eye with on a lot of things.

Yeah. It was unfortunate, but while the fellow was very educated he was just also not a good fit for me in terms of our interests and stuff. Plus there was a sense of urgency bc we were scheduled to part ways at graduation — me for work and him for a major military elevation. That wasn’t how I wanted to “get” the guy… by “trapping” him just as he was about to spread his wings and fly…. And I was right. He ended up very happy and successful, married a gal who understood military life and would follow him to the moon at the drop of a hat. I still keep in touch with them bc they’re really wonderful people.

Have you heard the expression “you don’t propose unless you know the answer will be yes,” well I have not rejected an actual proposal, but I did let my boyfriend know that he should not propose for a while. He was hinting around about it and I said that I was not ready. So, he did not officially propose, does that count as rejecting a proposal?

However later I was ready and I let him know that, and he proposed and I accepted, this is the same guy and we are still happily together.

I have never proposed or been proposed to, but a girl I know asked me if I wanted to move into her house and get her pregnant and spend the rest of our lives together (which would have led to marriage). Unfortunately she was the long time ex-girlfriend of one of my good friends. I didn't know if she was more motivated by the desire for a child and an honest partner who is not a drug addict, or to spite my friend and get revenge on him. My friend also told our group of friends that anybody who started fooling around with her would have to fight him and he would not be their friend anymore.
