Today’s my bday, boyfriend didn’t say anything?

So today’s my bday. My boyfriend works the late shift 4-12 so his nights end pretty late. This morning I leave to work, he tells me he loves me and to be careful, but no “happy bday”. I’m trying not to feel hurt by it BECAUSE we had a party for me at our house on Saturday. He took me to the movies yesterday. So it’s not like he hasn’t celebrated me. Still though, it kinda hurt a tiny bit. Am I being a brat? A part of me thinks I’m just being selfish or something.

If the day isn’t over then there’s still time for him to say it, but if he doesn’t then honestly I’d say it’s one of those “choose your battles and this doesn’t have to be one” cases. Of course I don’t want to negate from how you feel — I think the average person could feel a twinge of hurt over this.


However, Between the birthday party and the movie, you’ve been plenty celebrated and if you’re in a good relationship then you should feel plenty appreciated/loved on your birthday and every other day. This should all be enough once you consider the fact that it’s someone else’s birthday too and it’s probably going a lot worse. Maybe they had no one to celebrate or acknowledge it at all, memories of a death on their birthday or it’s the anniversary of when someone passed, bad news, etc etc etc.


You are very, very blessed to be celebrated and acknowledged for another trip around the Sun, and you got to share those memories with a boyfriend who actively helped make it happen. I think all that matters far more than if he does or doesn’t give you another happy birthday. It’s just a phrase after all.

My friend was engaged to her now husband and he had a birthday, she only showed up for one hour to celebrate with him, because she had a part-time job and was taking 5 classes in university as well. Her boyfriend looked at the long term situation - this woman would be his wife soon, and they would spend decades together, he did not gripe or get angry she did not make time for him on his birthday, he understood she had exams to study for and was busy with her job.
