Hey! His reason is his own. It might be to secure a relationship and confirm she is the only one for him. Perhaps he is young, or that his life is not ready but he is, and wants her to know that.

I read a lot of negative comments, and most appear to be from gals. Ignore the pessimism and give that ring, make that promise, but state that promise. It is a commitment to a future stage of your relationship. If you (assume you are the giver) go back on it, the ring is hers to sell so make it worthy.

Maybe the guy is not into marriage but wants to express his commitment. A promise is, or should be a promise regardless of what the State says or requires. Without a contract, he/she who honors that promise is more noble than the ones who do so out of fear or legal retribution or financial disaster.

My story: I had planned to ask my wife to marry me then a few days prior, she actually gave me a ring. It was not an engagement ring, and she never had pressed the marriage issue. After reading this Q, I now realize it was her promise ring to me. We had discussed marriage and she knew I was not a fan (being a divorcee). I knew her traditional values and legal matters would eventually demand I make a choice but she didn't know these thoughts. So ya, it was very cool for her to offer her loyalty to me unconditionally then offer a sumbol of that commitment without expectations. She actually had a set designed and custom made, simple design with our initials, so we each had one. A dual promise. And yes, to some extent she was letting the world and other women know that I was spoken for. I proposed 3 days later as planned and those rings are now our wedding bands.

How old is he? If he is your age , then that’s a little weird because that’s something teenagers do. A promise ring just means he is claiming you as his partner and promising you that he will be by your side. and pretty much making You his territory so other guys’ don’t try to take you away from him. Is he insecure?

It really depends on his age. If he's a 16 year-old in HS or 19 year-old college freshman, then he's just a young boy that's experiencing, youthful, puppy love. It can be cute at that stage. He doesn't know what he wants out of a relationship.

If we're talking about full adults (over the age of 22) and he's still into giving promise rings, then he's childless and lovebombing her into staying in a relationship without commitment so he can still her as a girlfriend for much longer. Promise for what? Either propose marriage with a wedding date or don't give her any ring if you're not going to marry her.

Unless the guy is in his teens or early 20s, it's a sign that he wants all the perks of being a husband but with no real commitment towards being one. Been there, done that. Not ever again.

It really just depends some people aren’t in a place (especially if they’re young) where they are ready to get married yet it’s just a gesture to show your love to someone.

Though I would be careful if someone’s promised to marry you 10 years ago but never does and makes excuses. You’re probably just being used until they can find someone else and if they can’t they will have someoem they can marry. That’s what narcissistic people do… and when they find someone to get married you’ll notice they marry in a fever

Honestly, I would fear she would interpret it as an engagement ring and one of two nightmare scenarios will happen:

1. She will feel overwhelmed not ready for marriage and dump you.

2. She will feel betrayed that it isn’t an engagement ring and sees it as a cruel joke which will shake up the relationship.

I literally would fear that, unless my girlfriend asked for a promise ring then I wouldn’t do it.
OR If I were to gift her the ring, I would make it clear to her I want to do this and isn’t engagement to lift the pressures off.
