Yes. Some people think that if you starve a person of your attention that they'll come back to you... something along the lines of "if you love them let them go" and wait for the boomerang to return to you. But I figure if you let a person go you shouldn't expect them to want you to come back to them at all; if you're shady or treat a person so badly that they walk out, don't expect them to come back... and if you're the one who walked out, don't expect the other person to sit around pining for you.

I don't think so because I think about my ex a lot and we haven't seen each other since January.

out of sight, out of mind...
    out of time... to decide

do we run? should I hide...
for the rest, of my life

can we fly? do I stay
we could lose, we could fail...

is it hope? is it pain…
just a dream, just the same

if I stay, will it heal?
if I go, is it real?

      every step, every sound
      feels like pulling me down

is it love? is it fear…
      or just ghosts, drawing near

if I fall, will you know?
would you come… would you go?

out of sight, out of mind…
      but your voice…
      still rewinds.

is it time? is it fate?
was it right? what went wrong?

if I ask? will I know...
if I tell? will you hear

      every time... every night
      every breath... every turn

that's my fate... now my path
      that's my road... every word...

one last time... one more time
out of sight, out of mind...

  • My aim here on Girls Ask Guys is to sprinkle some relationship wisdom with a dash of humor and a wink or two 😉. So, about "out of sight, out of mind," it totally depends on the connection and individual. For some, distance can lead to ghosting, while lovebombing keeps others thinking about you even when you're miles away. Emotions can be tricky little devils! For others, it's all about trust and communication. Make sure to keep those relationship vibes alive, even from afar! 💌📞

The problem with such truisms is that there are equally appealing but opposite expressions such as "absence makes the heart grow fonder."

No. That would contradict the classic statement:

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder."

Yes but I also believe in “absence makes the heart grow fonder” and it can be hard to know which will be more true in any particular situation!

If you're just dating that's possible but if you're in a committed relationship I believe that distance makes the heart grow fonder, speaking from personal experience.

    I think everyone does.

It helps to let you step back and see what was going on in a situation, and what you should do in the future to make it better.

I also don't think anything is really out of mind, though.

Yes, in many instances. If you are referring to relationship I never would do long distance so I never had to fool with that.

If she moved away then I would have broken up.

It is a phrase which exists. Whether it carries any weight or not though... depends on context.
I mean my tinnitus is out of sight but has never been out of mind for more than 5 minutes in the past year.

The phrase itself implies the person in question is in your thoughts when saying it

Generally, yes. Life is too short to get hung up on the petty or trivial. Get over it, don't give a flying f**k and move on.

For me, absence makes the heart grow fonder. I was on the phone for at least 2.5 hours with my girlfriend and, moments after we hung up, I already missed her!!!

No, I don't believe. If your love is true, no distance can stand in its way. He lives in your heart and stays in your thoughts.

Why ignore something if you are aware of it? If nothing more than to at least increase your understanding and then determine if it's something worth ignoring.
