Coworker calls me “friend” constantly but gets sarcastic or jealous when I mention other girls. She once said she was emotionally invested—why?

There’s a woman I work with who constantly calls me “friend” — in person, over text, and almost every time we talk. It’s become her trademark with me. But here’s where it gets confusing: whenever I mention other women or call someone else a friend, she becomes sarcastic or distant. Once, she even admitted she was “emotionally invested” in me but said she isn’t anymore. Despite that, her behaviour still feels possessive, like she doesn’t want me too close, yet doesn’t want anyone else to take her place either. It’s a strange mix of warmth and withdrawal — sometimes she’s caring and engaging, then suddenly cold or uninterested. I can’t tell if she ever had genuine feelings, is denying them, or if I’m just misreading everything. What does this sound like to you — confusion, control, or just friendship boundaries taken too far?
