Why do you remain faithful to your partner?

Question

This question assumes that you are or have been either married or in a long term relationship in which you both expected your partner to be faithful. I believe that most people respect their promises and remain faithful but not everyone respects their commitment. I am aware of two partners who cheated on me (maybe there were more, but two who were confirmed cheaters) but I have never cheated on anyone, including the two who cheated on me. For me, the primary motivation for faithfulness is self-respect; I want to think of myself as an honorable man. I also try to follow the Golden Rule. Other people may have other motivations. I've never cheated and I really don't understand why a lot of people do. Firstly who has the time? Especially as a woman, I work a full time job im to tired and busy to even think about hooking up with another man and making all that extra effort of shaving and all that. Secondly its a waste time why would I bother marrying my husband, going through all time and energy building a good relationship with him to just ruin it all on a quick shag doesn't really seem worth it.

Thirdly I could never hurt my husband because I love him, I believe if you cheat, you never truly loved that person and the mental torture you put that person through is horrible. It would completely ruin someone's trust and confidence. I love my baby and I the idea of hurting him makes me feel sick inside. Id probably be heart broken myself.

Forth if you cheat a lot of people will lose respect for you but most of all it shows you dont have respect for yourself or your partner and you'll always be seen as a cheat.

Because in life you make sure before you do what your going to do that it is right for the both of you you communicate about it and if it's right  I don't care how much money you have. I don't care what material things you have. You have nothing. The only thing that you have in life is your word  And that's it your word is your name  Now if something gets broken you both try to fix it.  But if you think you are better than the other person and that you are entitled to do what you want. Because you want to and you're unfaithful, then your word means nothing. You mean nothing.

Because that’s what a relationship is all about , being loyal and honest and respectful to each other , what would be the point of a relationship if you planned on cheating on them? Why get into a relationship with them in the first place if you can’t stay faithful? Love only grows between 2 people that choose each other , that respect each other , that stay committed to each other , that sacrifice for each other , if you can’t do that for your partner , you will never experience true love with them period because that would mean you are a selfish person that only thinks about yourself and selfish people don’t experience true love , they only experience what they feel is best for themselves and they will end up lonely one day when nobody wants them because they are a selfish person. Not only is a self-respect thing (if you don't want to be with your partner, then don't just cheat, have the guts to break up), but it is obviously a respect thing for your partner.

Monogamy and faithfulness are the default. It doesn’t require a special kind of commitment to NOT cheat. Cheating demands more time, energy and intent than NOT cheating. More often than not for men, it demands more money too.
That’s a lot of unnecessary expenditures just to be almost universally loathed.

there was no talk about "have you ever cheated, were you ever cheated... are you faithful, do you value faithfulness" none of the sort

so for me, it was never a "try" it was never an "effort" and definitely not a struggle... we both understood and talked about a committed, exclusive relationship and that was it, it only continued as that, I never had to make a promise for it... and I never really thought of them promising me to be faithful either

Proper intimacy is only possible with full mutual trust. This works only in mutually faithful and balanced relationship, where both partners don't feel exploited in some way. This is the goal.
This might sound for cheaters naive and gullible, however it's lack of their experience and their own mental pressure to be always the winner, even if it's self delusion. That's why it never works out with cheaters and people who are prone to cheat.
From my reference point. I'm very assertive and competitive by my nature, controlling most guy isn't a big challenge if I want to. However I behave very benevolent and nice, like to people from my family if I like someone. It's always very disappointing and gives helpless experience for me when a guys consider this as weakness. I can't change someone's instincts and nature.

I never cheated on any of my girlfriends, meaning that I never had sex with someone else behind my partner's back. I consider that immoral.
I decided that I didn't want to continue a couple relationships and found new girlfriends, but I broke up with my girlfriends rather than having sex behind their backs.

When I finally decided to get married, I made a solemn vow "to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, to love and comfort you, honor and keep you, and forsaking all others, I will be yours alone as long as we both shall live."
I would never break that promise.

I don't believe in monogamy outside of Marriage. Mainly since Marriage has a purpose and meaning. Getting Married is a sacrifice that you make for another person for a reason. Either to have kids or to take care of someone less fortunate. This doesn't mean I go out of my way to be disrespectful to any person I am with, if I have a girlfriend, then I make sure she understands that we are just that, Friends. We are both free people. If she wants to have children then things will change. Monogamy has more to do with the children than just being a selfish person trying to own and control someone else.

There are many posers that are not in real Marriages. They Marry for lifestyle and real estate. This is an act of prostitution for financial compensation. They have the view that since it's monogamous they are morally superior to others when the exact opposite is Reality. It's not a Marriage that can withstand life changes since lifestyle is what it is entirely based around.

For me… fidelity comes from intention. If I choose someone as my partner, it’s because I trust and respect them and believe in the future we have been building.

Most men don't cheat because women reject them. Therefore, a few men, the top 1 to 5 percent, cheat a lot and they are not choosy. There are multiple reasons to not cheat not just one. First thing is that I have choosen this person as my life partner and I seriously want this relationship to work. Why to spoil things by doing such stupid things. Second no body is perfect so why to cheat. Because he is always on my side when I am on my lowest point. We both had issues in the past. I struggled with bad skin and he was overweight, dealing with social anxiety. We helped each other and been through a lot. He managed to lose weight and my skin cleared after visiting multiple dermatologists. We are now married and can’t see ourselves cheating on each other. For me, it’s about respecting my relationship and taking it seriously, even when things get hard or mistakes happen. Nobody is perfect. One of the dudes I work with at work was raised Catholic, still Catholic.. he said he couldn’t because of the guilt he would feel.

I cheated back in my asshole days because I didn't truly know myself or have a handle on myself.. I also chose my partners for the wrong reasons (she's hot), which made cheating easier on my psyche.
