You may have studied in a history class that the Vietnam War, which went on for years, was based on the lie that we could "win" it, and other lies perpetrated by the advisors around President Johnson who were determined to prevail. That ended badly for our nation, the soldiers involved and the Vietnamese people.

There are always lies and half truths surrounding the making of war against a nation or nations that are threats. There's little pure about the systematic killing of people, even if it ends conflict or stymies bad actors. There are losses on all sides.

It was true that we could win it. The lie was that our forces were not allowed to. It could have been becuse defense contractors were all getting rich and did not want the gravy train to end or maybe leadership just did not have the will to do what needed to be done. As a result, the US lost over 50,000 soldiers and really alienated a whole genertion.
