Can things ever work out with my boyfriend after what his daughter did?

Even though we were together for just 15 months at the time, it felt like we've known each other for the longest.

He was a single father and the mother was out of the picture. She was arrested before for drug addiction and DUI. She hasn't been involved in her daughter's life.

At the time the girl was 8 years ago and at some point I moved in with him and brought my cat. The daughter started displaying jealousy. To make long Story short, many things happened. The last straw was my cat suddenly dying and about 3-4 months later I find out his daughter (a couple days shy of her 9th b-day by then) poisoned my furry friend and felt no remorse at all. I broke up by then. A child already knows right and wrong at that age.

My now ex boyfriend has been getting his troubled daughter help. The girl is now 12 and it turns out, her maternal grandfather (her mom's father) is a convict with long criminal history and violent streak.

We do speak on the phone at times. He explains the progress on his daughter. Do you think things can work out one day or it's best to forget it?
