Am I really the jerk for bringing my nieces/nephews home late?

The kids were talking to there friend from baseball and it took them awhile to get ready to go home and they did not want to come home. Apparently I am banned from seeing them for a while because I didn't follow the rules and must be punished because I am not the parent. I tried to follow the rules. I told them we have to go several times.

My Dad is also banned and so is my girlfriend. my dad screamed at me for an hour and a half. I ended up going to a minor league baseball with my girlfriend which was fun. Sil was also mad I didn't come right away to pick them up in the first place. And almost didn't let them go. i had to do two things first.

I don't think you're a jerk but clearly your siblings are taking it seriously so I guess you don't really have much say in the matter. Honestly, your brother/sister/whatever sounds like a twat.

I remember telling my sister when she got preggo with her first kid I was going to be the cool uncle and spoil them rotten no matter what she says. I've lived up to that promise and done far worse then "being late" while bringing her kids home.

Hell, I bought my 5year old nephew a mini-bike for his birthday that absolutely ripped. They were PISSED but... "have fun telling him he can't ride it". lol.

Sure if you pushed away the kids from talking to their friend and forced them to go home then you’d be perceived as “mean” and put them in a bad mood as for everyone else would be happy for your responsibility (since it wouldn’t effect them at that point), it seems you’d be a “jerk” anyway. I’d rather be a jerk to the adults than to the kids since that can bitter their childhood.

You tried and you made the kids happy, so it sucks yes however you did a good thing in that sense. I feel like 1 hour and 30 minutes is a bit excessive to scream at someone with when they were at least trying to do a good job.
And if you had two things to do first then you had two things to do first.

And yes it sucks you are banned for a while, wish it weren’t the case.

You’re not the jerk here, you’re the scapegoat. Kids being a bit late because they’re chatting with friends is normal, not a crime. Your SIL’s “you’re banned” reaction and your dad screaming for 90 minutes is emotional overkill, borderline lovebomb–then-punish dynamic.

You acknowledged the rule, tried to leave, and the kids resisted. A simple “please be on time next time” would’ve been fair. Banning you, your dad, and your girlfriend sounds controlling, not protective. You deserve clear expectations, not power trips.

That's a line I don't cross. Someone else's kids. Then I play by someone else's rules. If I'm gonna be late, I communicate why and when we'll arrive. You could have called their mom and put her on the phone to lay down the law to her own kids and tell them to get their ass in the car. Or you could have been the mean aunt and told them... the train is leaving NOW, get your asses in the car.
