Did my ex truly feel that way or just repeat what his mom told him?

So I’m going to try and make this short and sweet.

My ex and I were together for quite some time, we shared the same values, we had things in common and I thought I found my person.. until I kept asking for the bare minimum and helped him in so many ways. Let’s just say he was a good person but not a good partner.

We kept having the same conversations every few months, things got better and back to the conversation. He basically took advantage of me, it took me awhile to realize it.

Anyways our conversation last year he was emotional and didn’t want to take a break and wanted to work through it. Which basically didn’t last long.

Before we had our recent conversation we were both excited about our future and talking about the next steps, we had a plan and things were good. Then a few days before our conversation I sent him a note that explained my thoughts since I have a hard time expressing myself in person.

The next day we met up and he basically took my words and basically copied and pace my words saying he hasn’t been happy for awhile as well and things I boosted about what he was good at made it seem like I was being too much for him. So we decided to take a break and he asked me if he was still going to the event that was a month from then and how my family was.
He is very influenced by his mom’s opinion and she’s very strong opinionated. So he most definitely read it to his mom and apart of me thinks his mom told him what to say

He meant what he said
His mom took over
