There’s reason to believe that she was raised by a narcissist. So she didn’t know any better. Even when she knew something was “wrong”, it was the same kind of wrong that she’d experienced most of her life.
Abusive relationships are strange that way. People who grew up in abusive homes are actually uncomfortable in healthy, respectful relationships. There is often shame and denial that factor into not reporting IPV, and going back to an abusive partner as well.
