An early Greek philosopher made a distinction between two types of happiness, one was spiritual happiness built around love and philanthropy and moral gifts and another was sensory happiness built around the satiation of the five senses we have, recently psychologists have a third definition of happiness called emotional richness which is neither based on moral sense or physical sense, I read the entire article and still have no clue what they mean, but I’m offering you a fourth option: the idea of holistic richness as a mechanism for happiness.
The bible says stingy people become very poor but many continue to grow in their business and their income, so what does it mean? I believe the poverty they mean is simply extreme unhappiness in their lives, when Bob Marley was dying, his last words were “money doesn’t buy health.” I know many people who earn high amounts of money but marry very abusive partners, or poor people who marry the very rich but get cheated on and abused and I know very rich and attractive ladies with education and class who suffer mental health issues and have difficulty finding husbands.
My cousin is both snobby and fake and ignores me in my own home and treats me like horse manure, and she is slim and rich but her husband hits her and yells at her, uses her for money, does not contribute enough to the family, is ugly and short, and her daughter is becoming obese while only around 7-9 years old. Her grandma is harmful to the welfare of her daughter and her grandpa is constantly fighting with her father and trying to drive them to divorce. She looks happy on the outside with her parties and good looks but inside she is miserable.
This is why the bible says you cannot be stingy and snobby and continue to be rich, you need humility and compassion and respect for morals to be genuinely rich. Because riches is more than just money, it’s loving relationships, meaning, purpose, confidence and health.
