The pharisees prided themselves on how pious they were, how much they fasted, how much they worshiped, how pure they were, how clean their speech was, how disciplined and healthy their diets were, how hygienic and clean their homes were, how educated and skilled they were, but Jesus taught them something new:
That being pious is not enough, you also have to value others, their emotions, their sacrifices, their efforts, their pains, their hopes, their joys, their needs, their intelligence and their wisdom. If your intention is to defame or judge somebody else, misinterpreting or being negatively biased makes it possible to hate everyone on earth, including God, but if your kind and gracious than you will be free from the cycle of hate.
Everybody had flaws, but Jesus saw so much value in deeply flawed people that he was willing to die on the cross for them, so if God himself sees values in sinners like the Samaritan woman with 5 husbands, how heinous would it be for us to pretend we are better than God by making fun of sinners that Jesus died on the cross to save and was willing to go through great trouble to associate with?
The bible says when you mock the poor you mock God and if you exclude the needy from God’s kingdom, none of the good things you do, the temples you build, the years of medical school or law school you do, the years you served as choir boy at church, will count.
