Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles according to Hinduism
Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles according to Hinduism

I decided to share this article with you inspired by the celebration of the Hindu festival Ganesh Chaturthi these days. In case you don't know, Lord Ganesha is the elephant God in the Hindu pantheon and apparently one of the most important deities there.

I grew up in a Christian environment, so at first sight, practicing Hinduism on a daily basis is something contradictory to my culture. That's still a taboo for me cuz I live in a very conservative Christian society (Orthodox Christian) where being influenced by Eastern philosophy is considered to be kinda inappropriate...

Firstly, lemme make clear that I'm not a religious person at all so I have no intention of supporting or going against any religion in this article. For me, spirituality is what really matters, not religion itself. So, I reckon that following the practices of any religion serves for people's spirituality.

I discovered Hinduism when I completed junior high school. I remember that back then I was shattered and helpless. My parents had been arguing all the time, my father was unemployed and I was bullied at school... As a young teenage girl, I was feeling that I couldn't properly handle the situation on my own. I needed someone to lean on, someone to trust, someone to call whenever all hopes seemed gone.

As far as I can remember, I started searching online for ways to deal with depression. One day I came across a YouTube video named "the wish fulfilling mantra". In fact, it was a prayer to Lord Shiva. Of course I was totally unaware of that, so I just listened to it believing that it was a magic song or something. But while listening to it, I felt something so intense that I couldn't define, I suddenly felt so strong and saved the mantra to my playlist.

I soon discovered a lot about Hinduism and started daily chanting mantras for different deities. It's become now a habit for me and I combine it with mediation whenever I feel like clearing my mind. I even started delving into Hindu philosophy by studying sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita...

Three years later and my problems have almost been wiped out. Yes, my dad found a job, I got accepted at my dream uni and became very sociable and successful among my peers. I had been praying to Lakshmi for money and to Krishna for love but I've now debunked the myth. I'd have the same results now even if I had worshipped Jesus or Allah. Because it's not about whom you pray to, it's all about faith... Deities are a projection of yourself, so when you worship them you immediately feel stronger to deal with any kind of problem in your life.
