It seems that my entire life has been filled with ideas about God that are not what most people in my community share.
I don't know if I wasn't paying attention in religion class, or if my mind sees things differently than my peers, but, yeah, that's me.

You're confused. Fear is in many forms, the fear of getting caught, is not the same as the fear of heights, for example.
When you're told to "fear God" it's more about not disappointing him and going against his wishes then having blind, ass clenching terror.
The fear of god is a control technique used by the church, and the mosque and any place where any religion worships god (any god).
It's not real it's a form of getting people in line to impose dominion over those unwilling to take control over their own lives.
All believers have the same thing in common they refuse the burden of chosing what they deem right and wrong and prefer being told that by a book written by man.

I always took the fear of God as a symbol of loss.
Not that he will kill you but the fear of the emptiness that will be placed upon you without God.
In regards to others I think it is the fear of Gods capabilities to leave you burdened. Like you would fear if someone you really loved decided to hurt you in the most painful way by leaving you taking that love away and replacing it with pain and loss.
There is no reason to fear God as he is not worth fearing nor is he worth worshipping.

Fear is used in a different way in that context. It is used in a way similar to that of the respect a child should show to his parents. You shouldn’t be scared of God, rather the opposite because God will always love you no matter what. 💕 The old meaning used in the Bible is a synonym for reverence and awe.
Look, the fear is of God is a like you fear that he will punish you and no one will save you... And no one can.

The times that I had a thought about it yes I actually feel that there there's nothing really in this world that I'm scared of I would be a scared I would be totally afraid of God I think anything else you'd find a way to take it on I believe it would be completely opposite with God

The fear of God is exactly like the fear of harm, the difference is, it makes you obey God from a place of love rather than from a place of baseless fear.
I personally feel like the fear of God was put in the Bible to gain control. I feel like God wants you to love him , not fear him. Fear is one of the major things that holds people back and stops them from becoming who they are or who they want to be. Its a major reason that homosexuality is so frowned upon. Fear of God is simply the Churches way of worship, making it's followers for centuries fear being punished so they do everything they can to be, in their own image, "pure" and "holy" people to go to heaven.
It really depends on what the group you value generally thinks. These religious things will always morph to what a population prefers. The stories will always rise & fall with the ebb & flow of human civilization.

Im not condemning you. Jesus came to save us but if you dont know you need a savior you can't really go to heaven. You see Jesus died as the payment for our sins and without him we fall short of Gods Holy standard.

My Sunday school teacher said it means to "worship him". But I guess in a way it can also mean to respect him
I never liked that term, unless it was used as a threat, I suppose. My feeling is that we should have a very healthy respect for God and His ways.
I guess, fear the wrath of God might promote that healthy respect but I also believe that because He knows we are not perfect, we're going to make mistakes so there isn't a hard edge to things.
